' SLIDE FOR AUTOMATIC FASTENERS.

This invention relates to a slide for an automatic fastener and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprising wings having diverging portions for coaction with the members of the fastener, together with means for effectually holding the wings against spreading and also to effect a separation of the members of the fastener when the slide is moved-with respect thereto in the desired direction.
The invention consists in the details of constructionand in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my imroved slide for an automatic fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more conveniient and advanta eous for use, as will be hereinafter more ully setforth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein F1 ure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating a slide constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;

As disclosed in the accompanying draw- 7 ing, 1 denotes the marginal portlons of material bordering an opening or gap 2 and which portions carry mterlockin fastenin members M. These members hf are pref erably of a type particularly illustrated in my a plication for patent executed on even date erewith;
' Coacting with the members M is a slide S. The'major portion of this slide is preferablly formed of a single blank of sheet meta of requisite gauge and com rises the so of the wings W having their opposed en portions tledor connected at thelr central part by an inte :11 web or plate 3.- The web or plate 3 is of a length whereby the wings W when folded in overlyin relation are spaced apart a distance to re 'ly receive therebetween the members as the slide S is moved along the opening or gap 2.
The inner or connected end portions of the wings W are provided with the diametrically opposed and substantially V- shaped lateral extensions 4 and the outer marginal portions of said extensions 4 are defined by the inwardly disposed flanges 5 continued along the adjacent outer mar ginal portion of the wing W proper.
- The outer portions of the wings W are of a width to closely approximate the inner ends of the members M or those end portions attached to the fabric so that the flanges 5 as the slide S is moved in one direction will have requisite coaction with the members M to cause the same to have requisite inward relative swinging movement to effect the desired interlocking engagement therebetween.
The web or plate 3 at its transverse center is longitudinally slotted, as at 6, the extremities of the slot 6 being in ,communi-- cation with the openings 7 provided in the ortions of the wings W immediately ad- ]acent to the web or plate 3.
The slot 6 permits requisite separation of the adjacent portions of the plate or web 3 to permit the requisite application of the intermediate portion 8 of a staple member A. After the staple A has been applied such portions of the web or plate 3 ad]acent to the slot 6 are returned to overlie said portion 8 of the staple and thus effectively maintain the same in applied position.
The intermediate portion 8 of the staple A extends beyond the outer faces of the overlying wings W whereby the side members or legs 9 of the staple A have close contact therewith and thus effectually holding the wings W against spreading. These side members or legs 9 are of a length to closely approach the outer or free ends of the wings W and are held against swinging movement by having their extremities received between the outstanding knobs or protuberances 10 carried by the wings and preferably pressed outwardly therefrom.
Engaged with one of the side members or legs 9 is a tab 11 to facilitate the requisite manipulation of the slide S.
With the members M in-interlocking engagement, the requisite movement of the slide S will bring the intermediate portion 8 of the staple A' into contact with the inwardly inclined outer end faces 12 of the members M thereby efiecting a separation apparent thereof as is believed to be clearly1 h t e presto those skilled in the art to whic ent invention appertains.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a slide for an automatic fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A slide of the class described, comprising spaced Wings, a web connecting similar ends of the wings and longitudinally slotted, the
