UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. GILLINGHAM AND ALBERT L. GILLINGHAM, OF GRIGGSVILLE,
ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHABLE LINKS FOR CHAINS. I
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,983, dated August 24, 1875; application filed ,January 30, 1875.
Toall whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES H. GILLING- HAM and ALBERT L. GILLINGHAM, of Griggsville, Pike county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Link for Spur-Wheel Chains, of which the followin g is a specification Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of one of our improved links, taken through the line a: m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-sec tion of the same, taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the main part or body of the link, and Fig. 4 is a detail side view of the key or smaller part of the link.
Similar'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our iuventiouhas for its object to furnish an improved detachable link for spur-Wheel chains which will enable links to he quickly and conveniently attached and detached, to lengthen and shorten the chain or to replace a broken or worn link with a new one, and which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, strong and durable.
The invention consists in the body and the I cross-head key, constructed as hereinafter described and secured to each other detachably by a pin or rivet, as set forth.
A represents the main part or body of the link, the inner side of which that comes in contact with the face of the spur-wheel is concaved, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In the end parts of the body A are formed two inclined slots, a, leading in from the outer side of said body, and which are designed to receive the ends of the spur-links. The middle part of the bodyA between the slots on is not quite so high as the points of the end hooks formed by the said slots at. B is the cross-head key or smaller part of the link, the shank of which passes through a mortise in the middle part of the body A, and the head of which is made of such a length as-to fit in between the points of the end hooks ot' the body A, as shown in Fig 1. The key B is secured in place by a pin or rivet, 0, passed through a hole in the middle part of the body A and through the shank of the said key B, as shown in the drawings. With this construction, by simply driving out the pin or rivet G the link can be taken apart and readily attached to, or detached from, the chain.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The body A and key B, constructed substantially as here-in shown and-described, and secured to each other detachably by a rivet or pin, 0, as set forth.
Witnesses: JOHN F. WATKINS, BENJ. B. HOPKINS.
