LEATHER-FINISHING MACHINERY.
- Application filed May 24,
My invention relates to leather finishing machinery. It has for its objects, to minimize the dai'igers incidental to leather finishing; to provide a new and novel leather finishing machine, adaptable for snufiing, buffing, shaving, seasoning and polishing processes; to reduce the manual labor re quired in leather finishing; to reduce the cost in leather finishing processes; to produce improved results in leather finishing; and to provide the various other results and advantages made evident from the following specification.
I accomplish the objects of my invention as shown in-the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows one side view of my device and Figure Zshows the opposite side thereof. V
Referring again to the figures A shows the work table or plate mounted on the shaft B so as to insure an upward and downward moven'ient in the base C, said upward movement being controlled by the foot lever D mounted on the fulcrum E, and the downward movement by the resistance of the spring F (see Figure 2). An abrasive belt G is shown mounted on the pulleys H and I so as to run, abrasive side down, parallel to the table A. A presser foot J is shown mounted on the shaft K so as to insure an upward and downward movement in the sup port L, said dowi'iward movement being controlled by the lever M mounted on the fulcrum N, and the upward movement by the resistance of the spring 0 (see Figure 2). The levers D and M are joined by the wire 1 so asto insure movement in unison.
A seat Q is shown conveniently positioned by the operator, allowing the lever "D to be controlled by the operators right leg. The guards R, S and T are shown adapted to provide protection to the operator from moving parts. A suction blower U is shown mounted to carry off the by-products as they fall from the belt Gr and table A. A motor V is shown connected by the belt W to the pulley H to transmit movement to the finishing mechanism.
In use the operator sits on the seat Q. The skin to be finish-ed is'placed on the table A beneath the belt G. The motor is started and the belt movcs over the surface of the skin. The operator presses down the lever D, the table A moves up, the presser foot J moves down, firmly pressing the skin therebetween while'the belt steadily moves over separate, and the on the table 1927. the surfaccthcrcof, performing its function with perfect ease to the operator and avoiding the manual effort incidental to finishing methods heretofore used. As the foot pressure is released, the table and presser foot as desired or required.- Interchangeable belts of varying abrasive, cutting, and polishing surfaces are provided and render the device adaptable to all stages of leather finishing processes. The presser foot J is optionally provided with a series of small rollers on its contacting surface, but a covering of wool felt is found to be very satisfactory in minimizing friction heat.
lVhile I'have illustrated and described a preferredconstruction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the ap pended claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America:
1. In a device of the kind described a finishing belt so mounted as to provide for a motion of one surface thereof parallel with the'surface of a work plate, rendering the belt and plate between a skin during the process of finishing, and means for exerting a pressure between said belt and plate, said means comprising a presser foot mounted parallel to said belt opposite said plate, and spring and lever means adaptable to raise and lower said foot and plate in relatively opposite directions.
2. A leather finishing machine comprising a frame, an endless abrasive belt mounted on the frame, power connections for ac-- tu'ating the abrasive belt, a work supporting table mounted beneath the beltfor moveskin is readily repositioned adaptable to receive therement toward and away from the belt, 5
spring means, for urging the table toward the belt, a presser member mounted above the section of the belt passing above the work table for movement toward and away from the belt, said presser member being in registry with the Work support, spring means for urging the presser member toward the work support, a pair of pivoted actuating levers, one connected with the presser member, and the other with the work support, and said levers being connected togetherat their ends to cause same to be actuated simultaneously to control the pressure exerted on the Work and belt by the supporting table and presser member.
3. A leather finishing machine comprising a frame, an endless beltmounted on the frame and having one continuous abrasive surface, power connections for actuating the endless belt, a Work supporting table beneath the belt for movement toward and away from the belt and having its supporting surface facing the abrasive side of the belt, spring means for normally urging the table toward the belt, a presser member above and in registry with the Work supporting table and movable toward and away from the table, the belt passing between the press-er men'iber and the table, spring means for nornrallf: urging the presser member toward the table, a pair of pivoted actuating levers, one connected with the presser member and the other with the Work supporting table, and means connecting the levers at their free ends to cause same to be actuated simultaneously to control the pressure exerted on the work by the presser member and work support.
In testimony whereof 1 ailix my signature.
