A. DUDFIELD ET AL VISIBLE STRIP SCREED AND GROUND Filed Feb. 26. 1927 Patented May` 8, 1928.
` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVIN DUIDFIELD, O F LIBERTY, AND GRANVILL P. MORRIS, F KANSAS CITY,
. i MISSOURI.
VISBLESTRIP SCREED AND GROUND.
Application led February 26, 1927. Serial No. 171,257.
This invention relates to a visible strip screed and ground for use in applying wood or metal trim in lireproof construction work.
An important object of theinvention is to provide a device of this character' which is readily embedded in the finishing plaster work and which, in applied position, will be visible and readily accessible for the attachment of trim thereto. n
A further object of the invention is to produce a readily constructed screed of suoli formation that it provides a socket-for the reception of a Wood block affording any attachment means and so houses the block that it cannot fall out should it be split in use.
These and other objects we attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purposevof illustration is showna preferred embodiment of our invention and wherein 1 Figure 1 is a plan View of a screed con-v structed in accordance with our invention; Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View show ing the same as applied `in the wall;`
Figure Sis a sectional view showing the blank from which the trough and its fianges are formed, the dotted lines indicating the points at which the blankis to be bent.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates a trough formed from sheet metal and having at its sides outstanding flanges 11,
tacting the bottom Wall 12 of the trough and the upperends of the side walls 13. These flanges are preferably made sinuous, being at present illustrated as having a single bend 14 formed therein intermediate their attached and unattached edges. In. the flange are formed openings 15 and 16 through which the wall plaster may pass to firmly lock the .screed in position in the wall.
lVithin `the trough is arranged a wood block 17, this block having its upper surfac(J substantially flush with the upper edges of the side Walls and being retained in position in the trough by tabs 18 formed integrally With the body of the trough. In the pres-p ent construction, the tabs 18 are formed by cutting the material of the flanges 11 adjato the side walls 13 of the trough in a semicircle, the cord of which is the attached edge of the fiange. The flap thus provided is then bent inwardly upon the upper surface of the wood block 17 to retain the same in position. A screed of this character is applied to the wall with the bottom of the trough outwardly disposed. The wood block being firmly held within the trough and reinforced by the plastering thereabout will notfall out should it split `or break when the trim is lsecured thereto. Under manycircumstances, the tabs 18 are unnecessary, as the trough can be made to grip the block with sulicient force to prevent loss theliicof before the screed is inserted in the wa Since the construction hereinbefore set forth is capable of a certain range of change and modification without materially de parting from the spirit of the invention, we do not limit ourselves to such specific strueture except as hereinafter claimed.
lV e claim im v 1. A screed of the character described comprising a trough having flanges extending outwardly from the upper ends of the side walls thereof, said flanges lying wholly between parallel planes contacting the bottom of the trough and the upper ends of the side walls thereof, said flanges being per forated, and a 4 wood blockl within said which lie wholly within parallel planes contrough.
2.` A screed of the character described comprising a trough having fianges extending outwardly from the upper ends of the side walls thereof, said flanges lying wholly between parallel planes contacting the bottom of the trough and the upper ends of the side walls thereof, said flanges `being perforated, and a wood block within said trough, the trough having tabs engaging the wood block to maintain the same in position therein, saidtabs being struck out from the material of the flange to thereby provide certain of said openings.
In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures.
