SAFETY DEVICE.
Application filed August 10, 1927. Serial No. 211,862.
My invention relates to safety devices. It is the object of my invention to provlde safety devices for use on highways ap- .)roaching railway crossings which are so designed as to force the operator ofthe vehicle to slow down at the crossings by reason of the irregularities placed in the roadway at will which are'of such a character as to not be permanently injurious to the vehicle but sufficient to force itto slowdown.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention applied to a highway adjacent the railroad track;
Figure 2 is a section through the highway on the line '2 2 showing ill-.(letftll the irregularity in its retracted position Figure 3 is a similar view of the irregularity in its elevated position;
It will be understood that my invention is applicable for use with either electrical, me chanical or pneumatic control.
Such control may itself be in turn actuated by suitable devices in connection with the railroad track, but the essence of my invention consists of a plurality of separated arched members inserted within the surface of the pavement over which the vehicle'is traveling, which arched members are so arranged that they may be elevated or inverted but not sufficient to be dangerous to a vehicle moving at a high rate of speed. Such projections may be left up for aperiod through which time expected trains will pass, or they may be intermittently raised automatically or manually, depending upon the conditions under which my invention is to be used.
Referring to the drawings in. detail, 1 is a highway which is divided in. the center by the usual stripe of paint 2. The highway is crossed by the railroad tracks 3. On one side of the railroad tracks on the right hand side of the roadare a plurality of grooves or cutaway portions 4; in which are located a set of base castings 5. This base casting is U-shaped. One arm 6 of the U-shaped casting is pivotally connected at 7 to an arched road plate 8 which in its normal position is parallel with the surface 9 of the road so that vehicles passing over it and on it are I not disturbed, but, when this road plate is elevated as in Figure 3, the vehicle will be forced to come to rest by reason of the severe jar imparted to it by this obstruction in the road.
This road plate'is elevated by a cam arm 10 pivoted to the arm 11 of the U-shaped member as at 12.
The free end of this cam arm 10 is pivotally connected at 13 to a link letthat is in turn actuated by a control rod 15. The cam arm 10 is provided with a cam nose 16 engaging with a similar cam nose 17 of the road plate 8.
The rod 15 may lead to a central control box or any other similar mechanism which will facilitate the control of these several road plates.
I desire to comprehendwithin my invention such modifications as may be clearly embraced within the scope of my claims and invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
1. In a safety highway device, a highway having a trough arranged therein, a base casting mounted in said trough, a road plate pivoted thereto adapted to rest thereon in a position parallel to the surface of the highway, and a cam arm pivotally mounted thereon adapted to elevate one end of said road plate, and means for actuating said cam arm.
2. In a safety highway device. a highway having a trough arranged therein, a. base casting mounted in said trough, a road plate pivoted thereto adapted to rest thereon in a position parallel to the surface of the highay, and a cam arm pivotally mounted thereon adapted to elevate one end of said road plate, and means for actuating said cam arm. said means consisting of a link and a road remotely controlled. y
3. In a highway safety device, the combination of a highway, a transversely arranged trough and an inverted U-shaped bed I plate, a road plate pivoted on one arm thereof having an upper face parallel to the sur face of the highway when in inoperative position, the othe arm of said bed plate supporting the other side of said road plate, a cam arm pivoted on said bed plate of one arm thereof having a cam nose, a. oooperating cam nose on the free side of the road Way an inverted U-shaped bed plate in each 1 plate, and link mechanism for actuating trough, a plurality of road plates pivotally said cam arm. mounted in said troughs and upon the bed 4. In a highway safety device, the corn plates and means for actuating said road 8 binatifln of a highway traversed by a railplates to n'ovidean irregular surface for the way track, a plurality of spaced transversehighway.
1y disposed troughs being arranged in said In testimony whereof, I afiix my signahighway 011 0pp0si-te:sides of the railroad ture.
