Morni- HAN, a citizen of the United States, residing atMinneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Replacers; and I do hereby. declare the following toy be a full, clear, and exact descriptionY of vthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to car replacers of the general type shown in the previous U. S. Patents to applicant Nos. 1,131,941, granted March 16, 1915, and 1,155,431, granted Oct. 5th, 1915, and involves certain improvements in the replacer, in the means for holding the same in place on the ties and inthe means for clamping the same to the track. .It is an object of this invention to simplify and improve (the means for clamping the replacer to the rail. v v
Another object of this invention is to provide 'a means providingk more secure engagenient of the replacer with kthe railroad ties.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide such a means for clamping the replacer to the rail that in operation the replacer will tend to become more securely clamped thereto. s Y

In Fig. 1, the rails of the track are shown as 1, the cross ties therefor, as 2, and la pair of replacers A. A pair of car orlocomotive wheels 3 connected by axle 4 are` shown in dotted lines. A pair of replacers is always used, which replacers are exactly alike in construction. A description ,of onewill therefore suflice. The replacer proper consists of two main portions, the portion 5, which is designedto receive the car wheels, and a portion 6 connected thereto, which is designed to engage the ties. The member 5 comprises a portion 7 of trape'zoidal configuration'and a triangular shaped portion 8 pivoted thereto, the two portions together constituting a wedge shape member, with substantially j continuous side portions. TheA portion 7 comprises a web 8a and top vand bottom langes 9 extending along its edges, It also comprises a central rib 10 extending Alongiv,tudinallythereof and spaced from web 8a. Two gage members 11 project at the end of this-rib and are adapted Ato engage-the side of the track rail, and together with the end portion 12 of member 7, determine the position vof the replacer relative to the rail.

It will be noted that the replacer described herein is reversible lengthwise, as well as vertically or crosswise. lVhen the device is inverted fi'om the position shown in Figs.

Referring to the clamping means 14, it will also be noted that as the car or locoplaced on both .motive rolls onto the replacer, the stress occasioned by the impact thereof will tend to' movethe replacer' longitudinally along the rail away from the wheels. With the clamping means shown, this stress will tighten the clampvto` more securely hold the replacer against the rail, and thus prevent any longitudinal motion.
