Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIGE.
LEVI OOBFMAN, OF FINDLAY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOSITIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,853, dated August 17, 1875; application filed July 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEVI GORFMAN, of Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Medical Composition; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the manner of compounding and using the same.
This invention relates to that class of medical compositions designed to be used in the treatment of displacements and diseases of the womb, such as prolapsus uteri, or falling of the womb, anteversion, retroversion, ulceration of the womb, and leucorrhoea, fluor albus,
or whites; and it consists in a medical compound formed by mixing together the follow- I in g-nanied ingredients, obtaining therefrom a fluid extract, and mixing the latter with alcohol in the manner and proportions hereinafter set forth.
To prepare the composition, take the following-named ingredients in their crude state, and in substantially the proportions hereinafter set forth, viz: Cornus Florida, one half ounce; hydrastis Oanadensis, one-half ounce; frasera verticillata, one ounce; gentiana, onehalf ounce; populus, one-half ounce; chelone glabra, one half. ounce; prnnus Virginiana, one ounce; humulus lupulus, one-halfounce; anthemis, one-half ounce; geranium maculatum, one half ounce; nymphzea odorata, one and one-half ounce; rhus glabrum, one ounce rubus villosus, one and one-half ounce; pinus Canadensis, two ounces.
Mix the above ingredients together, place them in a tin vessel with a sufficient quantity of water to cover them, and subject them to heat until the strength has been extracted from them; after which strain the liquor thus procured through a fine cloth into another tin vessel, and let it stand until it settles. When the liquor thus procured has become settled, pour it off, and add to it alcohol in the proportion of ten ounces of alcohol to twenty-two ounces of the liquor, and bottle it, ready for use.
The directions for treating the displacements and diseases of the womb above mentioned are the same in each case, viz: Take one ounce of the medical composition above described, heat it to a blood heat, and inject it, with a common vaginal syringe, to the womb, repeating the operation once, so that the injections will number two per diem.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A medical composition, consisting of cornus Florida, hydrastis Ganadensis, frasera verticillata, gentiana, populus, chelone glabra, prunus Virginiana, humulus lupulus, anthemis, geranium macnlatum, nymphzea odorata, rh us glabrnm, rubus villosus, and pinus Oanadensis, substantially in the proportions and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing medical compound, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 14th day of July, 1875.
