MIGROMETER ATTACHMENT.
Application led September 13, 1926. Y Serial No. 135,124.
suchcharacter that a iinely developed sensel of touch is not necessary in the operation thereof, and hence the attachment is as'accurate in the hands of an unskilled mechanic as it is in the hands of a highly skilled craftsman. Y l
Other object-s and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read 1n connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which :-r
Figure 1 is aview in side elevation showingv the attachment constituting the preferredembodiment of my invention as properly applied to a micrometer.
Figure 2 comprises disconnected perspectives, on'enlarged scales, ot' parts of the attachment hereinafter explicitly referred to.
Similar numerals not' reference designate corresponding parts in :both views of the drawing.
I show in vFigure 1 a conventional micrometer having a graduated barrel 1, and a thim blev 2 for cooperation with the said barrel and also for the movement of the usual element designated by 3." l
My attachment isfastened to one arm 4 of the usual U-sha-ped portion of the micrometer, and itwill be noted that among other elements my attachment includes a bar 5, grooved longitudinally at 6 and apertured at 7 and formed integral with or ixed to an arm 8 which is providedwith a teat 9 and is also providedl with `a U-shaped portion 1Q which is designed to straddle the end of the arm 4 and be detachably fixed thereto through the medium of a set screw 11. In addition to thebar 5y andl the arm or bracket 8, the attachment comprises a sleeve 12 slidable on the bar 5 and designed to be adjustably fixed thereto through the medium of a. set screw 13, andv equipped with an' ap-` ertured projection14for the reception of a rod 15 which is normally pressed toward the right through the medium ot'a spring 16 in` terposed between the projection 144 and an enlargement 17 onthe rod 15. t
In one side the sleeve 12 is provided with a threaded aperture 18, Figure 2, to receive a headed screw 19 which is designed to rest in the` longitudinal slot- 2() in the rear porftionv 21 of aslidable member 22. `The said` slidable member 22 isprovided with an arcuatesca1e23 for cooperation with a swingable pom-ter 24 which 1s pivoted at in the;
member 22 and is provided with a slotted arm 26. It will also be noted that the membei-.22 is equipped with an arm 27 of channel form at 28 and provided on its outer side adjacent to its end witha teat 29, the said teat 29 being designed to bear at a point op posite the aforementioned .teat 9 `incident to the taking of an inside measurenlent.A
The forward portion of the member is arranged in lapped relation to a member 30 and is held under yielding pressure against the side of the said member 30 by the resiliency of the arm 27; it being understood in` this connection that the member `3() is slotted at 31 to receive the bar 5, and that the chan knel portion28 ot the resilient arm27 is pivotally connected at V32 to the member 30. It will also be understood that the member 30 hasa `Stud33 movable in the groove 6 of the bar 5 and also has a lateral pin 34, which extends through any arcuate slot` 34X inthe inner wall of the member 22 and is disposed in the slot of the arm on the pointer 24, Wherebyswin'ging movement of the pointer 24` will attend slidingmovement of the mem ber 22. The rod 15 is pivotally connected at 35 to the rear side ot' the member 30. From this it Willbe understood that the spring 1li will operate `to yieldingly hold the member 30 against movement toward the left in Fig ure 1. Adjacentto its lower end the membert) is provided with a teat 36 that is opposed to theforward end ot' the micrometer element 3. I prefer that the teat be in the form ofascrew threaded intoV the lower end portion `of the member 30, and that the said teat 36 be provided with one or more minute apertures 37 so thatthe shank of the said screw `may be expeditiously and easily threaded into and out ofthe member 3() as, when it is desired lto substitute a smaller or larger teilt-'36 for the one illustrated.` Y
The slot or opening 31 in the member 30 isslightly larger than the bar 5` to permit ot' pivotal or swinging movement of the" member 3l on the bar 5 in the direction ot' the length of said bar, the center of said movement of the member 30 orr bar 5 being! 'Ill the pivot connection 32 between the member and the arm 27.
It will bemanifest from the'foreging that my novel attachment is readily applicable to and removable from a conventional mi crometer, and that when applied as shown in Figure 1, the attachment is susceptible of use with great facility.
The device as shown in Figurcl is capable of taking inside measurements in thousandths of an inch from about eight-r sixteenths of an inch upward, and manifestly the low limit of the device will be determined by the design and construction, and the smaller the size of the device, the measurements of which are'to'be taken, the more useful will my novel device be found.
In the operation of my improvement the screw 13 is loosened and the parts associated with the sleeve 12 are moved along the bar 5 to a position commensurate approximatel with the size of the parts to be measure The. points or tears 9 and 29 are then `disposed in the part to be measured, the screw 13 is then tightened and the thimble of the micrometer is screwed or turned until the pointer 24` is coincident with the line in the center of the arcuatey scale 23, it being remembered in this connection that the member 22 is slidable and that movement of the member' 30 will by the connection described bring about movement of the pointer 24, whereupon the size of the part being measured may be read on the barrel 1 Vof the micrometer. l
It will be apparent from the foregoing that by virtue of its construction my improvement is accurate in the hands of an unskilled workman which is manifestly an important advantage.
It will also be appreciated `from the foregoing that my improvement is simple and inexpensive in construction, and is free of delicate parts such as are likel to get out of order after a short period o use.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact understanding of the said embodiment in all of its details. I do not desire however to be understood as limiting myself to the constructionand relative arrangement of parts as disposed, my invention being defined by my appended claims within the scope ofwhich structural chan es or modifications may be made Without eparture from m invention.
