CENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
Application led August 18, 1924. Serial No. 732,840.
I centrifugal' pump with a battle plate ad@ justably supported adjacent to the outletfrom the pump. and means for supporting the lbattle plate in selected adjustments with respect to the rotor to regulate the overthrow of the lid/uid about the rotor.
Additional advantages of the construetion will be apparent from theV following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an end lelevation shown on the line 11 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the pump .taken substantiallyon the line 2 2 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken substalb tially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the pump, portions being broken away to show the main shaft bearings and lubricating system therefor.
Fig. 5 is a Fig. 4.
section o'n the line 5-5 of Fig. 6 -is a sectlon-on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
trated in the drawing the pump is shown as mounted on a base comprising parallel arranged I-beams 1 which support the pump housing and the bearings for the main shaft. The stator of the pump housing.V comprises the substantiallycylindrical casting 2 which is e uipped with integrally cast supporting brac ets 3 bolted to the supporting members 1. The casting ,2 has integrally formed and downwardly extending annular {ianges 4 to which end plates 5 and 6 are secured by bolts 7.
Axially located with respect to the end plate 5 and bolted thereto by bolts 8 is a flanged inlet fitting 9 to which the pump supply or suction pipe is connected. The inner periphery of the pump housing has sectionaLsteel liner plates 10 secured thereto, said liner plates covering the ninner surface of the periphery wall and extending ,upwardly against the inner surface of the outlet conduit 11 which is integrally cast with the housing.
The stator is equipped with a bleek 12 the outer face of which matches the inner peripheral wall of the stator housing. The
In the embodiment of the invention illus-n block has a vertical wall 13 which, throughout its length, is in longitudinal continuation of the adjacent portion of the wall of the outlet passage from the pump. The inner face of the block is curved forming a wall 14 that meets the wall 13 and thereby forms a sharp edge adjacent to the periph-V ery of the rotor. The block is held in place 'in the stator housing by adjustable screws 15 that operate in slots 16 through the wall of the housing. cated in selected adjustments so that the edge thereof is spaced selected distances from the periphery of the rotor. This block constitutes an adjustable baiiie wall that prevents the liquid or other material Thus the'block may be lo drawn into the pump from passing in the vspace beyond the out-let opening and between the inner face of thel housing and the periphery of the rotor. Where the opening beyond the outlet opening from the stator housing and between the rotor and the stator is unobstructed there VAis an overthrow of material beyond the outlet opening which reduces the eflicieneyl of the pump. The provision of the block battling this space results in an increase inthe etliciency 0f the apparatus. 'j
The rotor of the pump is supported on a power shaft 17, said shaft being mounted in external bearings 18 carried by I-beam brackets 19 supported on the members 1, and -a bearing 20 carried by the stator housing. The shaft 17 passes through the stator housing and has bolted to its inner end the hub 21 of the rotor.
The rotor is of known construction comprising 'a shell 22 in which is mounted a series of curved vanes 23. In order to take up the space between the rotor shell andan end wall of the stator housing, thereby preventing vibration, an improved end thrust mounting for the shaft 7 is provided. This mounting comprises the bearing 20 that is made up of two sections 24 and'25. The section-24 has an arcuateiang'e 26 and the section 25 has an arcuate flange 27 matched bolts 32 the collar 29 may be moved toward and away from the bearing 20. As the collar 29 is moved outwardly by the adjustment of the bolts 32 pressure is exerted on the discs which are forced against the collar 30, drawing the shaft outwardly taking up the space between the rotor and the stator.
The bearings for the shaft 17 are of special construction, the bearing 2() comprising a bearing housing 33 in which is mounted a journal bearing 34. The bearing housing 33 has a recess at its inner end in which is placed packing material 34. In Athe outer end of the bearing housing is a packing gland 36 with packing material 37 at the inner end of the gland The gland is taken up by screws 38 which pass through the member 36 and into the end of the bearing housing. The bearings are of similar construction and all of the bearings have a special lubricating system which comprises oil cups 39 mounted in the top wall of the bearings and discharging through openings onto the top face of the shaft and a second set of oil cups 40, said oil cups 40 connecting into the lower bearing member,' which lower bearing member has a series of branch passages ll, the openings of which lie against the under face of the shaft. The oil is fed by gravity in this manner against both the upper and lower faces of the shaft, eli'ecting etiieient lubrication of the shaft in the bearings.
The pump is equipped also with an ejector conduit 42 that enters the upper part of the stator housing, said ejector being controlled by a valve 43 for priming the pump.
It will be noted that the end plates or heads of the pump are so arranged that they may be interchanged on the stator housing, thus the pump may be made a right or left hand pump merely by reversing the end plates and reversing the position of the rotor blades. i
I am aware that the invention may be v modified in certain particulars without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. I do not limit myself therefore to the exact details shown and described, but
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A centrifugal pump comprising an approximately circular housing having an outlet passage, a rotor mounted in the housing and extending approximately to the plane of the axis of said outlet passage, a block withinthe housing having a sharp edge extending toward the rotor adjacent to said outlet passage, and means for supporting said block in selected adjustments to vary the distance of the sharp edge of said block from the periphery of the rotor.
2. A centrifugal pump comprising an approximately circular housing having an outlet passage and having slots through the wall thereof at a distance from said passage, a rotor mounted within the housing. a block within the housing adjacent to said out-let passage having a sharp edge extending toward said rotor, and bolts extending through and being adjustable laterally l in said slots and engaging and supporting said block, the positions of said bolts in'said slots determining the distance of the sharp edge of said block from the periphery of the rotor.
