T.l OLSEN ET AL HUG SINGER Filed sept. 221, 1925 Patented May 1, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS OLSEN, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, AND JOHN W. IMAY, OF WINNIPEG, `MANII- TOBA, CANADA, ASSIGNORS TO HARRIS ABATTOIR COMPANY, LIMITED, OF TO- BONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
HOG- SINGER.
Application med september 24, 1925. serial No. 58,414.
The principal objects. of the invention are, to effect a material saving in the cost of singeing and scraping hogs inthe process of preparing the carcasses for the market.
It has been the practice, to pass the car-` casses of hogs through a vertical vflue mamtained at a definitely defined temperature for the purpose of driving the gelatine from the hide and otherwise cleansing the exterior of the carcass and the cinder formed on the hide `has been scraped off by hand.
The present invention conserves the heat using the very minimum and thoroughly cleanses the carcass after it has been singed.
The principal feature of the invention consists in the novel construction of a furnace having a horizontal heating chamber provided with entrance chambers at the ends, having double swingdoors and a carrier for carrying the carcasses therethrough, and in thenovel construction and arrange ment of a pluralityof rotatable brushes at one end of the furnace between lwhichthe carcass passes after passing through the furnace.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational and part mid-sectional view of our improved device.
Figure 2 is a plan sectional view taken through the line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevational and part sectional view taken through the line 3`3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional and elevational detail of the trackway, trolley and endless chain arrangement for carrying the carcasses through the furnace.
In the construction herein shown, the furnace 1 is a long narrow horizontal type having the side walls 2 joined in an arch over the top.
At each end of the furnacethere is arranged a compartment 3 separated from the main heating chamber Ljeby the double swing doors 5 which are preferably formed hollow and water cooled.
The outer sides of the compartment 3 are closed by double swing doors 6 which may also be water cooled, if desired.
A suitable arrangement of heating means .is provided and is here shown in the form of oil burners 7, which enter through side openings 8 in the side walls of the furnace and are fed by the oil and air pipes 9 and 10.;
A fine l1 extends from the top of the main heat chamber 4; and branch flues l2 lead from the end compartments and connectk with the main flue.
This arrangementvof flues carries off all smoke and odor from the furnace.
A trackway 13 extends through the centre ofthefurnace, being suspended a short distance below the top, preferably on hollow brackets 14 which are connected to cross pipes 15 through which water is circulated from tbe side pipes 16.
The hollow brackets are connected to va longitudinal pipe 17 which forms or carries a trackway. This arrangement of a `water cooled traclrway is necessary on account of the high temperature maintained in the furnace in order that the trackway will not be burnt out. y
iframe 18 is arranged outside of the furnace and carries the vertical shafts 19 on which are secured the sprocket wheels 20.
The inward pair of sprocket wheels are arranged close to the vertical centre line of the furnace and slightly below thelevel of the traclrway, while vthe outer vpair of sprockets are arranged outsidevof the furnace wall.
An endless chain 21 is mounted on these sprockets and is provided with a plurality of spurs 22 which extend under the track esj way and areadapted to engage the trolleys Y ,carcass passes through the compartment 3 so that when the inner doors are opened the intense heat from the furnace will be closed in by the outer doors. 4 Y
The heat and smoke escaping from the inner chamber of the furnace when the inner doors are opened, escapes through the branch flue followingthe closing of the inner doors.
Vilfhe earcasspasses through'the furnace and striking the inner swing doors at the other end. passes into the compartment
