F1. P. NIELSEN APPARATUS FOR FACILITATING THE SALVING OF SUNKEN SUBMARINE VESSELS AND THE LIKE Filed JulyZO, 1927 Patented May 1, 1 928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RASMUS PETER NIELSEN, OF COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.
APPARATU S FOR FACILITATING THE SALVIN G OF SUNKEN S'UIBMARINE VESSELS AND THE Application filed July 20, 1927, Serial No My invention relates to an apparatus for use in salving sunken submarine vessels.
The apparatus consists in a buoy which is detachably secured to the deck or some appropriate part of the submarine vessel by a suitable mechanism by means of which the apparatus can be released from the interior of the vessel. The essential feature of the apparatus in question is that the buoy carries two rotatable drums on which are wound the two parts of a line passed through an eye on the vessel. lVhen the vessel lies on the sea-bed and is unable to rise to the surface of the sea the apparatus is released and is raised by the buoy to the surface, the line being thereby partly wound off the drums. Thus both ends of the line are carried to the surface and by winding up one end and lowering the other it is possible to draw a lifting cable or chain secured to the line through the eye.
To the buoy may be secured a light pole with a flag or mark which serves to indicate the position of the vessel. In case of larger vessels a number of apparatus may be arranged at both sides thereof, it being thereby possible to apply lifting cables or chains at more points.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings in which Figures 1 and 2 show a front view and a top view, respectively, of the apparatus.
The apparatus consists in a buoy a with a fork Z) and a shaft 0 on which are rotatably mounted two drums (Z adapted to receive the two half-parts of a line a which is is passed through an eye f on the vessel, the ends of the line 0 being secured to the drums (Z.
lVhen the apparatus has been released from inside the sunken vessel and the buoy a ascends and floats in the surface of the sea both parts or ends of the line are found at the surface of the sea and by winding up LIKE.
. 207,276, and in Denmark August 10, 1926.
one end and lowering the other it is possible to draw a strong cable or chain suitable to the purpose through the eye 7 whereafter the vessel can be lifted.
. By this method a quick connection is established to the vessel and better conditions are obtained for saving the crew. Mainly when the vessel lies deeply so that a diver is not able to go down to the sea-bed it is possible by means of the apparatus in question to commence the salving of the vessel immediately.
It is obvious that various modifications may be made in the embodiment shown in the drawings and above described without departing from the principle and scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An apparatus for facilitating the salving of sunken vessels, comprising a buoy and two independently rotatable drums carried by the buoy and adapted to receive the two half parts of a line carried through an eye on the vessel. i
2. An apparatus for facilitating the salving of sunken submarine vessels comprising a buoy, a fork secured. to the buoy and carrying a shaft and two drums journalled 'on the said shaft. i
3. An apparatus for facilitating the salving of sunkensubmarine vessels comprising a buoy adapted to be secured to the deck of the vessel and released therefrom from the interior of the vessel, a fork secured to the buoy and carrying a shaft and two drums journalled on the said shaft and adapted to receive the two half parts of a line carried through an eye onthe vessel. the ends of the line being secured to the drums.
In testimony whereofI have aflixed my signature.
RASMUS PETER NIELSEN.
