UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
CARL M. WENDELSTEIN, OF NORTH ATTL-EBORC, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR BLISS BROTHERS COMPANY, OF
VANITY TO ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
CASE.
Application filed September 17, 1927. Serial No. 220,088.
either by use of the finger or by attaching a chain thereto.
The invention has further and other objects which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description. e r
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation partly broken away and in section with the case in closed position;
Figure 2 is a top plan view;
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of F s- Figure l is a perspective view showing the case in open position and held in the hand with the mirror in usable position, and
Figure 5 is a sideelevation of Fig. 4 on a. reduced scale.
The case has a body 1 and acover 2 hinged thereto at 3'. The cover is provided with a latch that has a curved shank 3 and a ball 4 on the free end of the shank.
The present invention particularly resides in the provision of a. member generally indicated at 5 which member has a base 6 formed to seat on the top edge of the body 1 and which is provided with integral riveting studs 7 whereby the member can be easily applied to the body and rigidly secured thereto. A finger hole 8 is formed in the member 5 so as to either enable the case to be carried by inserting the finger through the hole 8 or by employing the latter as a means of connection to a. chain, as may be desired. Beneath the finger hole 8 there is a second hole 9 which serves as a 7 keeper for the latch 4. The shank 3 of the latch is formed of spring material so that the same may be easily snapped into and out of engagement with the keeper 9 as is apparent. The member 5 may be of'various configurations in accordance with the style of the case and is of a length and width so as to afiord a firm and substantial finger grip or handle. By referring to F igures 4 and 5, it will be noted that the member 5 provides such substantial handle by means of which the case ma be held with the parts in open posit-ion an with the mir-' ror 10 of the cover 2 disposed in usable position.
When the parts are in the position of" Fig. 5, the cover has its hinged edge seated against the rim of the body 1, whereby the cover is held at an obtuse angle to the body as clearly shown in Fig. 5, thereb disposing the mirror in convenient usable position.
It will therefore be noted from the foregoing that the member 5 functions in a variety of capacities, namely, as a handle for using the mirror with the parts in open position as shown in Figures 4 and 5; as a finger receiving opening for carrying the casein the closed position of Figure1,and
as a keeper for the latch.
The member 5, it will further be noted,
constitutes a unitand same maybe easily and quickly applied or attachedto the case and at the same time; provides an 'ornamental head structure for the case.
Having thus described my invent-ion what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-' 1 ters Patent is y 1. In a vanity case, a body, a rigid handle having a finger-receiving opening projecting outwardly from a. side of the body, a cover for the body, a mirror on the inside of the cover, and means to hingedly connect the coverto the body at a. point opposite to the handle so as to hold the cover when open at an obtuse angle to the plane of the body.
2. In a vanity case, a body, arigid handle having a finger-receiving opening projecting outwardly from a side of the ody, a
cover for the body a. mirror on the inside of the cover, means to hingedly connect the cover to the body at a point opposite to the handle so as to hold the cover when open at an obtuse angle to the plane of the body, and a latch on the cover, said handle having an opening therein to provide a keeper to receive the latch, the keeper being spaced from the finger-receiving opening by 21. part of the handle whereby to hold the finger out 10 of contact With the latch. V I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CARL M. W'ENDELSTEIN.
