H. E. DELVIN COMBINED TENT AND SWING FRAME Filed Dec. '31. 1923 INVENTOR Dela/an 6,621 A 11/ AA ATI' NEY Patented Apr. 24, 1 928.
" HART E. nnnvnaor EVANSTON, IL'Lmo Is.
.ooiumnnn'rnn'r Ann swme'rmmn- 7 Application. filed December ,31, was. serialnb. 683,636-- This invention relates to improvements in combination tent, canopy and swing frames, and one of its objectsis to providea frame that may be used for supporting a tent cover. or one or moreswings and which, when not in use, may be dismounted forystorage in a limited space or for transportation. n i Another object of the invention is toprovide the framewithnotched feet. for -'.the
accommodation of anchoringv pegs or. pins to prevent the, device from being blown away or tipped over. 7 W i Th'esejand other aims, objects andpurposes which will become later apparent, are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereafter described in their preferred. embodiments and shown.
in the accompanying drawing, forming} a material .part of, this disclosurefand in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of cthe invention showing the-same .coveredsvith tent.
or canopy materialii 5.
Figure 2 is an end view of the device when used to support a canopy over aswing.
' Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1 through one of the windows.
Figure 4: is a fragmentary sectional View showing the manner of attaching a carpet or flexible flooring; 1 g
Figure 5 is a partial front elevational View of the same.
Figure 6 is an enlarged spective view of the lower end one of the supports] 7 Figure 7 is a partial plan view taken on line 77 of Figure 2 showing 'a' mattress and its supports.
Referring .to the drawings in detail, the tent frame consists of a ridge pole 10, preferably made of tubesconnected by sleeves and supported at its ends between parallel lugs 12, formed legs being in sections, jointed as at 14.
As shown, these legs 13 are held in proper 1 position'by sectional cross bars 15, connected at their inner ends by pivots 16 and similarly connected at their outer ends to collars 17. fixed to the legs 13. A second set'ofsimilar fragmentary perv at the upper ends of the g converging legs 13 of the end frames, these Extending inwardly from the collars 19 are between vwhich is secured one of other. lugs,
the vends ofa pairofbracerods 21, their opposite. ends being connected to the ridge pole 10. j
:The legs 13 are flattened at theirlower ends and out-turned to provide feet 22, havthenumeral24 is provided with openings 25', bordered onboth their-outer and inner sides by strips, 26 and 27, the inner edges of which,
overlie respectively, a plate 28 of flexible A flap 3Q'isattachedto the cover 24 above.
each. opening and to be rolled up into. the
ing recesses23 to receive anchoring pegs or pins (not shown) by means of which the frame is firmlyrsecured to the ground. e
The tent cover, generally designate'd by,
position, shownin vFig. 1 toadmit light into r the tent, or eXtendedat'length downward to prevent the passage of light as in Figure 3. In use the-frame is set. upas shown in the drawing and when used as a tent the cover 24 is fastened. at its longitudinal edgeswith the customary-stakes, When it is desired to convert the device into a canopy, sectional poles 31 are passed through the bight of the cover24 and supported by braces 32 attached at their ends thereto, the other ends of the braces being engaged with the legs 13 causing the cover to assume the position shown in Figure 2 on either orboth sides.
It will thus provide a canopy and a swing33, shown in. broken lines in Fig. 1, may be suspended from the ridge pole 10.
If'desired a floor may be used in, conjuncbe seen that the cover 24- will" tion with'the frame and cover and is arranged to extend around the bottom ends of the legs 13 and rest ongthe upper sides of, the feet 22 so as to allow for the free circulation of air between its underside and the 7 round. I Y LA flexible bottomf'or carpet 35 may also be provided and is attached to the lower edges of the cover 24 by means of buttons 36 V which are secured as shown, adjacent the marginal edges of the bottom and pass through aligning button holes formed in the I cover and in a 39 and 40t0 the bottom to provide a longitudinal 'casing'for the reception of the secflap 38, which is stitchedat l tional rods 31 which is preferably secured in any suitable manner to the legs 13. Openings 42 are provided at intervals in the flap 38 to facilitate the proper jointing of said rods 31.
vIt is to be understood that the ridge pole 10, legs 13, and braces may be made in solid or in separable. sections of nominal length which may be disjointed for, storage and transportation and readily fitted and connected together during erection of the frame. v
V In order to further strengthen theframe when the device is to be used as a sleeping tent, longitudinally extending poles 43, sectional or otherwise, are attached at their I claim as new and ends to the legs 13 by connectors 44, and to these poles are engaged the ends of a plurality of coiled springs 45, their other ends con: necting with a strong sheet of textile fabric a pair of divergent legs at each end, said legs being composed of cylindrical tubular sections pivoted at their points of intersection, foldable braces independently connecting the upper and lower sections of each'pair of legs, arms pivoted to the upper section of one of each pair of legs, said arms being angularly extensible .or closely foldable alongside the legs, a pole extending between the lower ends of said legs on each side,
said pole being also engageable with the outer ends of said arms when said arms are folded, a cover extensible over said ridgepole between said pairs of legsto the lower ends'thereof, means to secure said cover to said pole, and means to secure the edges of said cover to the main portion thereof when the pole is elevated by said arms to constitute a canopy; j j,
2; In a tent support, a frame composed of a ridge element, divergent legs pivoted to each=end of said ridge element, longitudinal rails connecting said legs at the bottomsthereof, braces pivoted to fold flatbetween I on each pair oflegs, necting said rails;
3. In atent support, a collapsible composed ofarigid ridge element, pairs 01'' jointed sectional legs pivoted'to the ends of and tensional elements consaid jridge'elenient, foldable braces-extend- 3 ing between the legs constituting each pair,
anda canopy adjustable on said support.
In testimony whereof I- h-ave signed my name to thisapplication.
' HART E. DELVIN.
