' HAND-OPERATED SHEARING DEVICE Application filed December 10, 1923.
This invention relates to hand-operated cutting devices of the kind in which two operating levers are connected by links so as to obtain a variable leverage and the said invention has for its object to provide an improved hand-operated cutting device ofthe aforesaid kind which device is more especially intended for use in shearing and/or cutting sheet metal.
According to the present invention the device comprises two operating levers pivotally interconnected by two links) angularly disposed to each other, each link having pivotal connection with each operating lever and 5 means carried by one of the said links adapted to co-operate with the means on the adjacent operating lever to effect cutting and/for shearing on manipulation of the operating levers. The two operating levers are pivotally connected by crossed links one of the links forming a bell crank lever (hereinafter referred to as bell crank lever) which is provided with attachable and detachable means to effect cutting and/or shearing. A part of the operating lever adjacent to the said cutter on the oflset portion of the bell crank lever is provided with an attachable and detachable cutter so that these two cutters on manipulation of the operating levers effect cutting and/or shearing in an extremely efficient manner. In the event of the bell crank lever becoming somewhat loose between the sides of the operating lever adjacent to the cutter on the said bell crank lever, means are provided whereby the said sides of the operating lever may be tightened on the bell crank lever.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood reference is made to the accompanying drawing which shews by way of example a construction in accordance with the present invention, but we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one side of the device and Figure 2 is a part elevation of the reverse side of the device shewn in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section with parts of the sides of the operating levers removed so as to shew the arrangement and disposition of the bell crank lever hereinafter referred to and the co-operating parts.
Serial No. 679,819.
Referring to the drawing the device comprises two operating levers 1, 2 pivotally.
. from the leverl is provided with a cutter 5,
the said cutter extending forwardly of the device and outwardly of the end of the adjacent operatinglever. The link 3 carrying the cutter forms a bell crank lever. The lever 2 is provided adjacent to the cutter 5 with a cutter 6 which is secured to the said lever 2 by screws 7 or other suitable means. The bell crank lever 3 is pivotally connected at 8 to the co-operatinglever 2, the other link 4 being pivotally connected to the lever 2 at a nection 8 of the bell crank lever to the lever 2 and to the lever 1 as at 14.
The bell crank lever 3 may be provided with a plurality of holes 9 and the.pivotal pins 8 and 9 connecting the said bell crank lever 3 to the adjacent levers 2 and 1 may be removable from their holes and may be inserted in holes 9 so as to provide for adjustment of the said bell crank lever 3 relatively to the lever 2. Holes .12 .Or 11 may also be providedin either the lever 1 or 2, or both levers 1 and 2, for adjustment purposes.
If so desired, the lever 1, Figure 3, which carries the bell crank lever may be provided with a number of holes 12 sothat the end 13 point 8 forward of the pivotal con-' of the interconnecting link 4; may be adjusted to any desired position within the range of the holes disposed along any desired length of the non-cutting lever 1. The operating levers 1, 2 are formed of duplicate metallic strips preferably interconnected by bolts and nuts 14 or other suitable means. The link 4 is also formed of duplicate strips through and between the strips of which the bell crank lever passes, the strips of the link 4 being pivotally connected at their ends and to the levers 1, 2. The lever 2 is pro vided with means such as a bolt 15 and nut whereby the sides of the said lever 2 can be tightened on the bell crank lever 3 if found necessary or desirable. The operating levers 1, 2 may be retained in the inoperative or non-cutting and non-shearing position by a spring 16 as shewn. The outer and rear end of the cutter 6 isprovided with a cutting edge as at 17 so that it may co-operate with the adjacent edge of the cutter 5 to effect the cutting of wire-and like material: The ;cut--' ter 5 may be formed as an integral part-of the bell crank lever 3 or the said cutter may berrig-idlyconneetedto the leverby any suit If so desired the outerand rear,-
able means. edge of the cutter 6 on the co-operating edge of the cutter may be tormedgias straight cutting edges instead of the formation shewn in the drawing, the purpose, however; being the same, 7
Ifdes'ired, the lever 2 and also the lever 1 tween.
operation of the hellcrank lever..
What we claim is A hand-operated cutting device comprisi ng' two op crating levers, crossed linkspivotally interconnecting said levers to cause the operative ends, thereof to diverge, during cute ting one of said links extending below one of the levers with its projection having a cutteiwwithuits cutting edge projected toward and in spaced relation to the adjacent lever, and a second'cutter carried removahly by said adjacent lever and having its cutting edge inclined downwardly and rearwardly In testimony; whereo'fdwe have hereunto signed'our names.
