' DRIVING MECHANISM.
Application led January 5, 1927. Serial No. 159,099.
4This invention relates to a driving mechanism for a rotary member.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved mechanism for driving a rotary member, which is particularly adapted for use in driving the rotary spider of the wrapping machine of my copending application Serial No. 159,100, filed January 5, 1927, but which in addition may be used with advantage in other machines whose operation involves an intermittent revolution of an element combined with an independent rotation ofthe element.
With this object in view and such others as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the driving mechanism, and in the combinations hereinafter described and particularlyl defined in the claims at the end of this specification.
The drawings illustrate the invention as embodied in a driving mechanism for causing the spider of a box banding machine to be intermittently revolved and successive of the box holding blocks to be rotated at the banding station, and wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a driving mechanism embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a detail in section through the spider; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same.
Referring to the drawings, dierent features of the present driving mechanism are, as above stated, shown as embodied in mechanism for driving the spider of a box banding machine, and the latter comprises kthe machine forming the subject matter of my copending application. A sufcient portion of such box banding machine has been herein shown to illustrate the present driving .mechanism, and briefly such machine'is provided .with a rotatable spider provided at its forward end with -four blocks spaced degrees apart upon which the boxes are carried during the banding operation. Pro- Yvision is made for intermittently rotating the spider, step by step, 90 degrees at a time, so as to present each of these blocks successively to a receiving station, where a box to be banded is placed upon the spider, then to a banding station where a strip of banding paper previously coated with an adhesive is wrapped completely about the sides and ends of the box so that it` overh'angs the top and bottom edges of the same, then to a folding station where these overhanging portions are folded over upon the bottom of the box and over the top edges thereof and then to ak pressing and delivery station at which the previously banded box, upon its' block, is pushed through a set of yielding presser rolls which act to more firmly `fix the wrapper to the box. The box is delivered onto a table or shelf, being retained The vpresent driving mechanism functions to impart the intermittent revolution to the spider and the independent rotation of the successive blocks at the banding station. The spider, herein shown at 12, is pivotally mounted on the forward end of aY shaft 14 which is journalled at 16 andv 18 in bearings secured to the frame of the machine, and has rotatably and slidably mounted at intervals of 90 degrees on its periphery the shafts 20, 22,124 and 26 which carry on their forward ends theiblocks 28, 30, 32 and 34, respectively. i
In thesev lfigures the block 28 is shown at the box receiving station ofthe banding machine, 30 at the banding` station, 32 at the' folding station, and 34 atthe pressing and delivery station.
For the purpose of intermittently rotating the spider to move each of these blocks successively through each of these stations, an arm 36 is secured to the rear end of the shaft 14. This arm is connected` by a linlr 38 to the outer end of a crank arm 40 pivotedat 42 tothe frame of the machine. Thecrank arm 40 is rocked by a block 44 pivotally mountedon a crank pin 46 secured to al gear 48. The length of the link 38 kis adjustable l, and also the effective length of the arm `36, --and these lengths may be adjusted so as to and 2) each time theshaft 14 is vrocked iny that direction, aV latch arm `5011s secured to "the shaft 14 within the spider 12 with its hub adjacent that` of the spider. During this movement neither of thel gears 100 and 102 are rotated about their own axes 20 and 22. Vhen, however, the latch arm and segment 108 rotate in a counter-clockwise direction and the spider is prevented from such rotation by the lock 58, the engagement of the teeth of the segment with those of the gear 100 will cause the latter and the block 28 to be rotated in a clockwise direction. The pitch radii of the segment 108 and gear 100 are preferably so proportioned that this rotation of slightly more than 90 degrees of the segment will rotate the gear and block exactly one revolution as is desired.
In order that the blocks 28, 30, 32 and 84 may be prevented from rotating at all times excepting while at the banding station, as above described, the gears 100, 102, 104 and 106 have secured to them shoes 116, 118, 120 and 122 arranged to ride upon the periphery of a circular disk 124- secured to a flange 126 formed on the shell 112, the shoes having concave faces 128 closely litting this periphery. A recess 130 is formed in the disk 124 opposite the banding station of a size sufficient to permit the shoes 116, 118, 120 and 122 to rotate within the same.
While the present driving mechanism has been illustrated and described as embodied in mechanism for intermittently revolving the spider of a box banding machine, and for imparting independent rotation of thek boxholding block while at the banding station, it is to be understood that the different features of the invention may be embodied in other machines within the scope of the following claims.
