UNITED STATES 1, 65,168 PATENT OFFICE.

TO UNITED STATES GYPSUM COMPANY WALL 30am).
Application filed December 2, 1919, Serial No. 341,942. Renewed October 21, 1921. Serial No. 509,866.
This invention relates to acom osite wall board and more particularl to t e type of board known generally as p aster board.
Among other objects, the invent on 1s 1n- 6 tended to provide a novel and 1m roved plasterboard of this type, wherem t e side edges of the board are rotected in a simple and effective manner without producing any points of weakness in the board.-
10 Another object is to provide an enveloped board of this character, in which either face thereof may be used as the exposed face of the board.
The invention consists in the novel com-' 16 binations and arrangements to be hereinafter described and claimed for carrying out the above stated objects and such other objects as will appear "from the following description and claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a plaster board, and
Fig. 2 is a transverse section throu h a portion of a board, oneedge only of w ich is shown.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in the several figures of the drawings. In the, illustrative embodiment shown in the drawing, the plaster board A comprises.
top and bottom covering sheets 5 and 6' respectively, and a body or filler 7 to which said covering sheets adhere throughout the area of the respective faces. The covering sheets in the embodiment shown are preferably of fibrous material, such as heavypaper. If desired, acovering paper may be employed in which theouter ply or layer has been sized during manufacture. The use of a. paper having an outer sized layer enables the board to be readily handled because of the strength and stiifness of such paper and obviates the necessity of the application of a coat of sizing when it is desired to apply decoration directly to the board in awall.
' The filler 7 may bej-"of plaster, such as stucco with which maybe mixed if desired, a suitable amount of wood fibre.
The margins of the cover sheets meet at the edges of the board and cooperate to cover and protect these edges.
' In the embodiment shown, these sheets meet without overlapping. The margin 8 of sheet 6 is folded around the edge of the board, and abuts the edge of sheet 5 at 9, providing a closed joint which lies at the edge of the board. This provides a board, both faces of which are smooth and without covering sheet joints. The edge of the board is covered and protected without producing any points of weakness. In a board in which the cover sheets envelop the same without overlapping, a paper sized in the manner indicated may be advantageously employed because the problem of securing adhesion to a. sized margin of a cover sheet is eliminated. Further advantages and features of plaster boards embodying this. invention will be apparent from the foregoing description.
It is apparent that the. embodiment illustrated may be made in any appropriate manner. The methods of manufacture of boards of this type are well understood and need not be described.
Obviously, the. present invention is not' limited to the particular embodiment illustrated but may be variously modified. Moreover, it is apparent that all features of 8 the invention need not be used conjointly, but may be employed in various combina tions and sub-combinations.
What is claimed is: I 1. A plaster board comprising top and bottom covering sheets, each consisting of plies of paper havin an outer sized ply and an unslzed inner p y, a plastic composition filler between the said sheets, an upturned marginal edge on the bottom sheet meeting the edge of the top sheet forming a non-overlapping meeting seam at the marginal edge of the said board.
2. A composite hoard comprising, in combination, a substantially rigid body, envel- 05 oping covering material adhering to said body, the edges of said covering material meeting without overla ping.
3. A composite boar comprising, in combination, a substantially rigid body, top and 100 bottomcovering sheets adhering thereto and meeting at the edge of said body without overlapping.
4. A plaster board comprising, in combination, a plaster body, covering sheets of 1 having a sized'outer layer and adhering to said body throughout and having its edges meeting in non-overlapping relation.
6. A composite board comprising, in combination, a plaster body, having an enveloping covering material, the side edges of which lie at the edge of the board.
7. A composite board comprising in combination, a homogeneous plaster body,- said body being substantially completely enveloped on its faces and side edges with reinforcing covering material, the edges of which terminate on the edges of said body.
8. A plaster board of the kind described comprising a body and a covering sheet arranged at each face side thereof, one of said sheets folded over the edge and extending substantially to and terminating at the opposite face and inclosing the edge.
9; A plaster board of the kind described comprising a body, and a covering sheet arranged at each face side thereof, one of said sheets being folded over one edge of the body and extending substantially to the opposite face side with its edge lying substantially flush with the outer .face of the covering sheet at said face side.
10. A plaster board comprising a body, and covering sheet portions on two adjoining angularly related faces of the body, one of the covering sheet portions terminating substantially. at the meeting edge of said faces, and the other sheet portion extending beyond said meeting edge substantially flush with the outer face of the other covering edge thereof.
11. A plaster board comprising a body, and covering sheet portions on two adjoining 'angularly related faces of the body, the
covering sheet portion on one of said faces having an end portion extending flush with the other of said faces, and the other covering sheet portion extending beyond the meeting edge of said faces substantially flush with the outer face of the other covering sheet portion and overlying the adjoining end part thereof.
12. A plaster board comprising a plaster body and covering sheets extending along and adhering to the faces of said body, the edge portion of one of said sheets being turned up at right angles toward the other sheet and terminating in the plane of the edge of the board.
13. A plaster board comprising a plaster body and covering sheets extending along and adhering to the faces of said body, the
edge portion of one of said sheets being turned toward the other sheet and terminating in the'plane of the edge of the board, said plane being at right angles to the face of. the board.
14. A plaster board comprising a plaster body and covering sheets extending along and adhering to the faces of said body, the edge portion of one of said sheets being turned up toward the other sheet and terminating in the plane of the edge of the board.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto. 1
EDWIN .L. GUSTAFSON.
