WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 3,1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
TBIIIMMER.
Application filed December 10, 1924. Serial No. 755,052.
-. other features of construction and in the connected by a flexible shaft 13 with a motor combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appendedclalm.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the trimmer.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the trimmer.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the cover plate.
Figure 4: is an enlarged plan view with parts in section.
Figure 5 is a similar view but showing the driving means.
Figure 6 is a section on line 99 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 8 is an edge view.
In these views, 1 indicates a' frame having a handle 2, and formed with an arcuate portion 1'. A bottom plate 3 is bolted to the frame and which is formed with the fingers 4 which cooperate with the rotary cutter 5 which has a pair of curved cutting arms, as shown. This cutter is fastened to the lowor end of a sleeve 6 which is carried by a bolt 7 passing through the bottom plate and through the fra'me'and through an enlargement 8 formed on the cover plate 9 which is held to the frame by the same bolts which -hold thebottom plate to the frame. A worm wheel 10 is also fastened to the sleeve 6 and these parts are held on the bolt by the nuts 11. A worm 12 is rotatably arranged in the space formed by the enlargement 8 and meshes with the gear 10 and this worm is 14 which is attached to a harness so'that the motor can be carried by a person uslng the trimmer. If desired, the flexible shaft can be attached to a worm 16 which meshes with a worm wheel 17, to the-shaft of which a hand wheel 18 is connected, so that the trimmer can be operated by hand. In this case the frame 19 which carries the hand the harness. The flexible shaft is enclosed in a casing 20 as usual. A sheath may be provided for the fingers when the device is not muse.
From the foregoing it will be-seen that as the revolving cutter passes over the fingers it will bring the material being acted upon between itself and the cutting edges of the fingers so that the material will be cut. The under face of the plate 3 is provided with tapering grooves 22 which communicate with the spaces between-the fingers so that the trimmer can pass over the stumps of the material being out without difficulty. The curved arms of the revolving cutter passing over the fingers will insure quick and efficient cutting of the'material as it passes between the fingers. As before stated, the trimmer can be operated by a motor, as shown in Figure 1 or by hand operated means.
It'is though from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the sever'al parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the'appended claim.
What I claim is v A device of the character described comprising a frame, a handle attached to the frame, a bottom plate on the frame fornied with a plurality of spaced fingers, an arcuate housing at the inner end. of the plate, a removable cover. plate for the frame having an enlargement, a bolt extending through the bottom plate and through the enlargevment, a sleeve mounted on the bolt, a worm gear mounted upon the sleeve, nuts threaded on the upper end of the bolt and bearing against the sleeve, a driven shaft extending through the enlargement, a worm upon said shaft adapted to mesh with the first worm, and a. rotary cutter carried by the inner end of the sleeve and rotatable over the fingers as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
