J. E. GLOEKLER METAL TABLE TOP Filed Dec. 28. 192s INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 27, 1923.
METAL TABLE TOP.
Application filed December 28, 1926. Serial No. 157,576.
My present invention pertains to metal tops for sausage and other tables, urn stands, cup warmers and other devices; and ithas for its object the provision of a metal table top characterized by a strong and durable covered construction neat and finished inappearance and susceptible of ready fabrication, and including an upstanding marginal guard formed and braced in a peculiar and advantageous manner, and also including an efficient and ornamental corner finish.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is `a perspective showing one corner of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 3 Figure 3 is a top plan of the corner portion of the structure.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective showing the corner portion of the covering element.
Figure 6 is a similar view of the corner portion of the top body.
Figure. 7 is 'a perspective of the corner portion of the guard brace member.
Figure 8 is a perspective of the corner member removed.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Thertop body l, preferably of pressed steel, is provided with pendent flanges 2, apertured at 3.
The brace member 4, also preferably of pressed steel, is apertured at 5 and is arranged to surround the flanged body 1 and to extend considerably above the upper surface of the same as designated by 6 in Figures 1 and 2. It is within the purview of my invention to liXedly connect the body 1 and brace member 4 together in any approved manner though I prefer to employ for the purpose rivets 7, disposed in the apertures 3 and 5,-Figures 1, 2 and 4.
In addition to the body 1 and brace member 4, my improvement comprises a sheet metal covering element 8, preferably of Monel metal. and a corner member 9 preferably of Asimilar metal. The covering element 8 is appropriately shaped to provide it with a top portion to rest solidly on the top of the body 1 as shown in Figures 1 and 2, with upstanding hollow guard portions 10 adjacent to the ends and sides of the top, and with pendent v,marginal flanges 11; An opening 12 is cut at the corner of the covering element and is disposed between the contiguous ends of the guard portions 10 and the similar endsl of the flanges llas clearly appears in Figure 5.
Incident to the fabrication of my improvement, the body 1 and brace member 4 are connected together in the relation illustrated, and the covering element 8, pressed or otherwise reduced to the shape described, is placed over the body 1 and member 4, after which the lower edges of the flanges 11 are bent to hook the same at 12X under the lower flush edges of the brace member 5 and flanges 2, Figures 1 and 2, so that the element 8 is strongly held by itself against'upward move- :nent relative to the body 1 and brace mem- The member 5 is designated a brace member because its upwardly extended portion rests within the hollow guard portions 10 ofelement 8 and against the outer side walls of said portions 10 and immediately under the bights of the same with the result that the guard portions 10 are stron ly reenforced and supported and liability o the same being vstruck or pressed out of shape is reduced to a minimum.
Either before or after the described assembly of the body 1,'brace member 4 and coveringelement 8, the corner member 9 is ypositioned as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, and
4, andis connected, preferably by brazing, to the flanges 11, the guard portions 10 and the inner horizontal portion of the covering element 8. The said member 9 is ofgeneral right-angle configuration, Figures 4 and 8, and is provided at its upper end with a cap 13 and an inclined tongue 14, and when applied and affixed in the manner indicated it affords a slightly raised effect-and constitutes a strong, protective and ornamental corner finish.
. Manifestly all four corners of the top are constructed in the manner of the corner It will also be apprec1ated from the foregoing that in novel top construction while possessed o the practical advantages ascribed to it, is further advantageous because of its simplicity and inexp'ensiveness.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. A metal top construction comprising a body having an upper surface and pendent flanges, a brace member having portions arranged at the outer sides of andffixedly co-nnected to the flanges of the body and extending upwardly beyond the plane of .the upper surface of the body, a sheet covering having an inner portion above the upper surface of the body and also having hollow upstandin-g guards and pendent flanges, said guards and flanges at right angles and at opposite sides of a corner opening, said guards receiving and supported by said brace member, and said flanges with hooks receiving the lower edges of the body flanges and brace member, and a corner member of substantial right angle configuration straddling and affixed to the pendent flanges of the sheet covering and having at its upper end a cap and an inclined tongue afiixed to the covering.
2. In a metal top construction, the combination of a to body having a surface portion and pen ent flanges, brace means fixed with respect to said body and extending above the surface portion thereof, and a sheet covering receiving the lower portions of the body flanges and brace lmeans and resting exteriorly thereof and having an inner portion above the surface of the body and also having upstanding hollow guard means receiving and reenforced by said extended brace means.
3. In a metal top construction, the combination of a top body having a surface portion and pendent flanges, brace means'xed with respect to said body and extending above the surface portion thereof, 'and a sheet covering receiving the lower portions of the body flanges and brace means and resting exteriorly thereof and having an inner portion above the surface of the body and also having upstanding hollow guard means receiving and reenforced by said extended brace means; the said sheet covering having a corner opening and also having a corner member affixed to the covering and arranged over said opening.
4. The combinationY in a metal top. oonf struction, of a top body Vhaving an upper surface, brace means fixed with respect to the body and extending above the said surface of the body at the edge portion of the body, and a sheet covering resting exteriorly of said body and brace means and permanently aiixed thereto and having y an inner portion above and against and suiported by the upper surface of the' bo y and also having upstanding hollow guard means receiving and reenforced by said extended brace means.
5. The combination in a metal top' construct-ion, of a top body having an upper surface, brace means fixed with respect to the body and extending above the said sui'- face of the body at the edge portion of the body, and a sheet covering resting exteriorly of said body and brace means and permanently aflixed thereto and having an inner portion above and against and supported by the upper surface of the body and also having upstanding hollow guard means at'right angles to each other receiving and reenforced by said extended brace means and further having a corner member straddling and affixed to the contiguous portions of 'f said hollow guard means and to the inner portion of the sheet covering above the upper surface of the topJ body.
6. In a metal top, a sheet covering having an inner portion and marginal .upstanding hollow guard portions and pendent flanges and also having a corner opening between the contiguous ends of the guard portions and the contiguous ends of said flanges, and a right angle corner member secured to said flanges and having an upper portion secured to said guard portions, in combination with supporting means on which said sheet covering is arranged, said supporting means having reenforcing portions for the 'guard portions disposed in said guard portions.
7. In a metal top, a sheet covering having an inner portion and marginal upstanding hollow guard portionsat right angles to each other and pendent flanges also at right angles to each other and also having a corner portion, in combination with supporting means against which the inner portion of said sheet covering is arranged and supported and having reenforcing orfbrace portions foi' the guard portions disposed in said guard portions; the sheet covering being permanently aflixed vto the supporting means and brace portions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN EDWARD GLOEKLER.
