ARMORED HOSE.
This invention is designed to form an effective armor for tubes.
The invention is illustrated in the accomdrawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a side elevation, partly in sect-ion.
Fig. 2 a side elevation with part of the armor in section with the tube flexed.
The tube is a flexible tube. As shown'it is made up of an inner wall of rubber 1, a layer of fabric 2, and an-outer wall 'of'rubber 3. This is of ordinary construction.
The armor is made up of alternate flat and curved wires 4 and 5, the curved wirebeing concavo-convex in cross section, the concave side being next the wall 3 with the edges rounded so that they may indent without cutting the wall of the rubber 3. The flat wire preferably overlaps slightly the concave portion of the curved surface wire and is carried maintained accurately with relation to the curved wires and make an approximately closed armored shield.
When the tube is flexed, as shown in Fig. 2, the flat wire at the inner side of the bend rides up on the curved portions of the wire and this draws the fiat wire down to the tube on the outside of the bend, the curved wires slightly separating due to theexpansion of the tube at the outer side and being brought closer together at the inner side of the bend.
By making the curved wire concave on its inner surface the edges locate the wire with relation to the wall and thus hold it in place so as to obviate any tendency to uncover portions of the tube and at the same time affords a space for the rubber of the tube to flow as it is compressed slightly at the inner side of the bend. Further the alternate square edges of the flat wire do not tend to catch material to so great an extent as wire having an undercut edge.
What I claim as new is 1. In an armored hose, the combination of a flexible tube; and an armor winding comprising alternate wires coiled spirally with the succeeding coils of each wire spaced apart, one wire having both its inner and outer surfaces flat and the other having in cross section its outer surface convex, the flat wire bridging the space between and the inner surface lapping onto the coils of the wire having its outer surface convex.

4. In an armored hose, the combination of a flexible tube; and an armor winding comprising alternate wires with the succeeding coils of each wire spaced apart, one wire having both its inner and outer surfaces flat and the other having incross section its outersurface convex, the inner diameter of the flat wire being greater than the inner diameter of the curved wire but of less diameter than the outside diameter of the curved wire, and flat wire bridging the space between and the inner surface overlapping the edges of the curved wire.

In an armored hose, of a flexible tube; and an armor winding comprising alternate wires with the succeeding coils of each wire spaced apart, one wire having both its inner and outer surfaces flat and the other having in cross section its outer surface convex, the inner diameter of the fiat wire being greater than the inner 7 of a flexible tube; and an armor winding w l the combination comprising alternate Wires with the succeeding coils of each Wire spaced apart, one Wire having both its inner and outer sufaces flat and the other having in cross section its I 5 outer surface convex and its innerasurface concave, the inner diameter of the fiat Wire being greater than the inner diameter of the between and overlapping the curved Wire.
