NOZZLE ADJUSTMENT FQR VACUUM CLEANERS.

This invention relates to portable vacuum cleaners and the object of the'improvement is to provide means for adjusting the noz le to or from the floor and holding the same in the adjusted position; the adjusting means being arranged to be operated by the foot for adjusting the height of the nozzle from the floor.
The above and other objects are attained w by mounting the wheels which support the nozzle upon crank arms formed on a shaft journaled in the bearings carried by the nozzle and by providing an adjusting lever pivotally connected to the nozzle and arranged to bear upon one of the crank shafts, a sector being carried upon the nozzle for engagement with the adjusting lever to hold the same in adjusted position.

which- Figure 1 is vacuum cleaner provided with the nozzle adjusting means embodying the invention;

Similar numerals refer to similar parts to throughout the drawings.
The casing 1 of the vacuum cleaner may be of any well known construction and as shown, forms the transverse nozzle or suction chamber 2 at its forward end having the lipsor rims 3 at the mouth of the nozzle.
A brush 4 of any suitable type may be mounted withinthe nozzle for engagement with the surface to be cleaned. The cleaner may be provided with amotor 5 of usual construction and a dust collector bag 6 connected to the outlet neck 7 of the casing, a
propelling the sweeper to and .fro upon the surface to be cleaned.
The rear portion of the casing is supported upon the usual caster 9, while the nozzle portion is supported upon the front wheels 10. These front wheels are journaled upon the crank arms 11 formed upon the J shaft 12 which is ,journaled for rocking movement in the bearings 13 and 14 fixed to the adjacent wall of the nozzle portion of the cleaner.

with the notched sector 15 upon which is pivoted, as at 16, the adjusting lever 17 which is provided with the outturned lug 18 arranged to extend through the arcuate slot inthe sector and bear upon the adjacent crank arm 11.
A. pawl 19 is pivoted intermediate its extremities as at 20, upon the adjusting lever and arranged to engage the notches upon the sector- 15. A coil spring 21 is interposed between the handle portion 22 of the pawl and the similar portion 23 of the adjusting lever to normally hold the pawl in engagement with one of the notches of the sector.
In adjusting the sweeper to elevate or lower the nozzle, the handle portion 22 of the pawl is depressed, releasing the pawl from engagement with} the sector, after which the adjusting lever is moved up or down as desired, and the pawl re-engaged with the proper notch in the sector. It will be seen that the weight of the sweeper will cause the shaft 12 to always remain in engagement with the lug upon the adjusting lever when the sweeper is in the normal posi tion upon the floor.
Assuming that the nozzle is in lowered position in order to raise the same, the handle portion of the pawl may be depressed by the foot, releasing the pawl from engagement with the sector and a continued downward pressure of the foot will move the adjusting lever downward, raising the nozzle to thedesired height, after which the foot may be removed from the pawl, permitting the same to engage-the proper notch upon the sector and holding the nozzle in adjusted position. i
I claim A portable cleaner provided with a suction nozzlefa crank shaft journaled upon handle 8 being connected to the casing for the cleaner adjacent to the nozzle and having crank arms, wheels upon the crank shaft, a sector fixed upon-the cleaner and having an arcuate slot, a lever journaled upon the cleaner and having a lug extending thrpugh said arcuate slot and bearing upon one crank arm of the crank shaft, a pawl pivoted upon the lever for engagement with the sector, and provided with a handle portion and a spring etween said handle portion and lever for normally holding the pawl in engagement with the sector.
