Description

UNITED STATES NPATENT QEFICE.
OTHELLO SUTPHEN, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,3 l 7, dated August 3, 1875; application liled May 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTHELLo SUTPHEN, of the city and county of Albany, New York, have invented a new and Improved EggBox, of which the following is a speciiication:
Figure l represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved egg-box; and Fig. 2, vertical transverse section of the same on the line c c, Fig. 1.
Similar" letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y The invention is an improvement in the class of packing boxes or crates 'composed oi' two parts or boxes, one inclosed within the other, and springs being interposed to relieve the contents of the inner box ofthe effect of jars, concussions, Src., received in handling or transportation.
The claim indicates the subject of the invention.
In the drawing, A represents the outer case or supporting-frame of my improved egg-box, which frame is made of Va base-piece, two upright side pieces, and a connecting top strip, a. At the outer part of the side pieces are suitable handles b, for taking hold of the box and lifting or carrying the same. rlhe top strip and the side pieces allow the placing of one box on the top of another in storing it for shipment inthe car, wagon, Sto. From the top strip is suspended,by strong spiral springs B, the egg receptacle or box with hinged or detachable perforated lids D, for supplying fresh air to the interior of` the box. The case A is of sufficiently. greater width and length to adapt it to receive the box C, but of greater height, so that the box may remain suspended with the eggs placed therein, and ride freely onthe springs Without coming in contact with bolt-irons ot' the outer case.
The springs take up the jerks and vibrations of the car, leaving the eggs, which are placed on top of each other, entirely sound, and unaffected by the motion of the car or wagon.
The sides of the egg-box are provided with slots d, in which guidepins e of the outer case project, for preventing' the too violent oscillations of the egg-box to the side of the case. The pins e serve as guides and pivots for the dii'erent positions of the egg-box, so that an easy vertical and side motion is allowed to the same, in place of the severe and injurious shaking and concussion to which eggs packed in the ordinary box or case are necessarily subject.
Having thus described my invention, Ici-aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The sprin g-suspended egg-box, having guideslots, in combination with the pivot-pins of the outer case, substantially as specified.
OTHELLO SUTPHEN.
