My invention relates to mattresses and the objects of my invention are: First, to provide a mattress structure inwhich the usual stretching, both longitudinally .and laterally, when reduced to a minimum; second, to provide a mattress in which kthe resiliency of the material used in stuffing the mattress will be retained to a great extent and to a larger extent than in the conventional mattresses; third. to provide a mattress, which by reas son of opposed tufts and tufted pockets, provides a very soft and resilient mattress structure; fourth, to provide a mattresss which is capable of being easily ventilated on the inside; fifth, to provide a mattress which can be made to suit individual needs and applicable for winter and summer use by providing different kinds of stuffing at the opposite sides of the. mattress; sixth, to provide as a whole a novelly constructed mattress.v and seventh, of this class which is simple and economical of construction, durable, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.

With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts and port-ions, as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying` Vdrawings and to the characters of referencel thereon, in which:

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, my mattress consists of two substantially identical mattress sections A and B secured together at their adjacent edges. Each section of the mattress is encased in a baglike fabric tick l. The one or normally outer side 1a of each tick is made of substantially the size of in use, will be eliminated or to provide a mattress' the completed mattress, while the normally i inner or adjacent sides of said ticks are made considerably longer and wider than the finished size of the mattress, as indicated by dotted lines C in the drawings. After the stuffing-is positioned in the ticks, the larger'inner sides lb of the ticks are sewed to the smaller outer sides la by means of the stitching twine 3. The outer sides of the mattress being held flat and the inner larger sides of the tick 1b being sewed to thel former, will permit the inner side of the tick to assume a tufted shape, while the outer side of the tick will remain flat or plane. This construction of the mattress sections will notpermit the mattress to stretch any appreciable degree, as is usual in the mattresses now in use particularly after long and hard wear. l y

The outer edges or corners lc of the mattress sections are sewed in bead form by the stitching 4, as in the conventional construction. The adjacent edges of the tufted adjacent sides lb of the tick are sewed to form flaps 1d or sewing edges. The adjacent flaps or sewing edges 1d of the two mattress sec- -tions A and B are sewed together by the stitching 5 forming a mattress having flat `upper and lower sides with tufted engaging inner sides and air pockets between the tufted portions.

Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions and a certain modification thereof, I do notWish tov be limited to this particular' construction, combination and arrangement nor to the modification, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as Vset forth in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A mattress, comprising apair of mattress sections, the one superpose-d upon the other, the outer sides of said sections forming the top and bottom of the mattress being relatively fiat and smooth, and the inner sides of said sections lying. adjacent each other being tufted forming oppositely disposed cushions and air pockets, and a box edge strip surrounding the side edges of said mattress sections `forming in appearance a one section mattress. Y

2. A mattress, comprising a pair of mattress sections, the one superposed uponthe other, the outer sides of said sections torming the top and bottom of the mattress being relatively 'flat and smooth, and the inner sides of said sections lying adjacent each other being tufted forming oppositely disposed cushions and air pockets, and a perforated box edge strip surrounding the side edges oit said mattress sections forming in appearance a one section mattress.
