UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MANASSAH C. GHEEK, OF MANSFIELD., TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEED-COTTON CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,258, dated August 3, 1875 application filed July 3, 1875.
' cleaning and delivering the cotton better than the ordinary cleaners will; and it also consists of a suction-fan in the dust-chamber below the spiked tan cylinders, to increase the draft through the dust-chamber.
Figure l is a top view ot' my improved cotton-cleaner with the cover removed, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation.
Similar letters .of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The cotton is fed into the opening A on top of the machine, and falls on the iron spikes C in the cross-bar B, where it comes in contact with the main cylinder-fan D, the spikes of which interlock with the spikes on the crossbar, and loosen up the cotton, carrying it over the concave grates E, or screen under said fan, at which time the blast created by said fan is also acting upon the cotton, separating the dirt and driving it through the screen, the cotton being carried to the small cylinder-fan F at the back of the machine, which also has spikes on it, and overruns the main cylinderfan, taking the cotton from it, and delivering the cotton from the machine at J.
l The blast created by the delivery-fan countei-acts the blast created by the main cylinderfan on the side otl said fan in contact With the delivery-fan. This creates a strong pressure of air down through the grates or screen E under the spiked cylindenfans into the dustboX, in which is the exhaust-fan G, thereby causing a stronger current of air to pass down through the gratesinto the dust-box than could be forced through by the fans above the grates, and by the use ofthe means above mentioned I secure a strong current of air to act upon the cotton all the time in which it is passing through the machine, in such manner as to separate all the sand and dust from the cotton Without injury to the staple.'
I believe this is the only way in which seedcotton can be thoroughly cleaned Without injury to the staple.
Havin g thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1 The combination of the secondary spiked cylinders F, concave grates or screen E, and the suction-fan G With the cylinder D and stationary spikes C, substantially as specitied.
