integral with the button, and in such case it is necessary to make a special provision to prevent abrasion of the thread against the sharp edges of the metal. See for example Letters Patent 1,072,921 granted September 9, 1913, to H. L. Davis. without prohibitive expense, to perfectly protect and guard all the edges to which the thread is exposed in movement of the button during wear. In the Davis patent it is pointed out that only the lower edgesof the openings through the metal are guarded, leaving the lateral edges sharp and in condition to cut in response to lateral or twisting motion by the button or fabric which it fastens. over of the edges of the metal button has been resorted to, as in Letters Patent 377,446 granted February 7, 1888 to Blum, et al. This however is not a shank button, and could not be substituted therefor, as the thread must pass entirely through the body of the button to take advantage of the principle in question. In still other cases a separate metal loop has been provided which is not integral with the body of the button but is secured to the same in some manner as for example in Letters Patent 243,563 granted June 28,1881 to Hunt. WVhile it is true that such shanks or eyes can be made smooth and rounded, there is no certainty of the fastening remaining intact under strain, and the hardness of the metal itself under constant wear produces sufiicient friction to finally wear out and break the threads in contact with it.

The foregoing remarks apply particularly to metal buttons and it is with this class of buttons that my invention is especially concerned. This body is covered as to its front face with a metal or equivalent facing, which may conveniently be formed up completeas a separate unit, with any desired pattern or insignia impressed upon it, then applied to the front of the body, which is properly shaped to receive and support it. and the edges compressed or spun or crimped over and about the edges of the body. Details of construction will be pointed out hereinafter.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2' and 3, I mark the body of the button 1, the facing, 2,. the shank, 3, the transverse opening through the shank, 4, and the spun over edge'by which the facing is attached to the body, 5. The body 1 is made of bone, mother-of-pearl or a similar material as hereinbefore set forth, with the shank 3 integral therewith and of sufficient length to bring the opening 4 in a plane clear of the edge 5 of the facing, so that no obstruction will be encountered due thereto, in sewing the button in place.

In Fig. 4 is shown a modified form of body in which the edge of the facing 2 is turned over into a rabbet 6 around the rear It will be apparent after reading the fore- Y going, as it has been found in actual practice, that myimproved button obviates all the objections heretofore stated, and produces results which have heretofore been impossible with the resources available in the art. I have produced in effect a one piece metal button, appearing as such, covered and protected from the front and side as such, but with a. relatively soft back which will not wear or abrade threads used to sew it in position, or of the fabric to which it is sewed.

It is to be understood that certain details in the structure and method of manufacture above described may be varied without departure from the invention. For example, I do not wish to be confined to the method of attaching the facing by spinning, pressing or crimping, as any other method which produces the desired result may be substituted therefor. Likewise. other substances suitable for the back may be discovered, and other substances suitable for the facing or front. In the example shown in the drawing, which was made from a full size device, the facing 2 is of brass, and the. body or back 1 is of mother-of-pearl used as a substitute for bone.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A combination button comprising a solid one piece body 1 of relatively soft material such as bone or mother-of-pearl, having a formed front and a flat back with a central integral boss or hub 3 projecting therefrom and provided with a transverse openin; 4, and a metal facing or cover plate 2 fitted upon and over the formed front of the body and having its edge 5 turned over the edge of the body and finished to form a smooth joint therewith leaving the back un covered between said edge and the boss or hub 3, whereby thread for securing the button in place may pass through the transverse opening 4 and at all times during wear as well as in sewing will come in frictional contact with the soft material of; the back only.
