Description

March 6, 1928. 1,661,948 j L. INNESS BASEBALL NOVELTY Filed May 9. 1927 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar 6, 1928.
UNITED STATES LAWRENCE INNESS, OF FREEHOLD, NEW JERSEY.
BASEBALL NOVELTY.
Application filed May 9,
My present invention has reference to a novelty that is primarily in the nature of a plate or sign holder, but is also of a highly ornamental design and construction so that the same may be employed as a paper Weight on a desk as Well as an ash tray.
In carrying out my invention I aim to produce what I will term a base ball novelty that shall include an ornamental base having ornamental pillars arising therefrom and connected by an ornamental column, the said pillars having on their inner faces hooks of a particular and peculiar formation and designed to suspend thereon plates bearing the names of the baseball teams in a league, the name plate of the league being arranged in the corners, the name carrying plates for the teams being thus interchangeably supported so that the positions occupied by the teams of the league in the different stages of the baseball season will be accurately arranged on the base of the device and further wherein the base of the improvement has a concavity therein that may be employed as a pocket or holder for desk utensils or they may 7 have arranged therein to project slightly thereabove, a coinbined cigar holder and ash tray.
The drawings illustrate the improvement, and wherein: p Figure 1 is a perspective view of a base ball novelty in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the hooks. I
As disclosed by the drawings, I make use of a base 1 which is milled to provide an ornamental design. Preferably the base is formed of some suitable hard wood and is is also highly ornamented and is of the 1927. Serial No. 190,064.
same material as the pillars and base. On one or both faces ofthe cornice 3 there is removably secured a plate 4 bearing the name of a baseball league. These plates may be reversible, having the names of the different leagues inscribed on the different faces thereof.
On the inner straight faces of the pillars 2 and at equidistantly spaced points there are arranged oppositely disposed pairs of hooks 5. The hooks each have an ofi'set shank 6 which is pointed and threaded and these shanks are screwed into the pillars. The hooks 5 are designed to be passed through openings 7 adjacent to the upper corners of plates 8. The plates equal in number the teams playing in a league and each of the plates has inscribed upon one or both of its faces the names of the baseball clubs in the league. As the teams change places in the playing of the games the plates 8 are removed and replaced to arrange the same in accordance with the standing of the clubs in the league, that is, the leading club is arranged at the top of the device, the second club next to the leader and so on.
The base 1 on its upper face is depressed to form the same with a pocket 9. This pocket may serve as a receptacle for desk utensils such as pens, paper clips, etc., but if desired the base may have arranged therein a removable ash tray 10 provided on its periphery with cigar or cigarette holding lips.
The simplicity of the improvement, the
'ornamentality thereof and the advantages of the same to a baseball enthusiast will, it is thought, be perfectly understood and appreciated so that a more detailed description is not deemed necessary.
Having described I claim 1. In a device for the purpose set forth, 95 a base, spaced pillars arising therefrom, a cornice connecting the top of the pillars, equidistantly spaced offset hooks arranged in opposite pairs on the inner faces of the the invention,
pillars, and said hooks designed for engagemo ment through openings in the corners of data carrying plates.
inner faces of the pillars, and data carrying plates having apertures for engagement with the hooks and designed to be suspended 10 therefrom.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LAWRENCE INN ESS.
