A plug having an opening therethrough, is threaded in the adjacent head 25, and an oil cup Bti is adapted to supply lubricant to the adjacent bearing. The opposite end of the shaft is provided with a relatively long extension 37 which extends through the adjacent head 25 for connection with a suitable power source. rlhe last named head Q5 may be provided with suitable packing 38 maintained in position by a gland 3) and a lubricant cup 4t) is adapted to supply oil or grease to the shaft. A bearing bracket 41 is secured to the adjacent head 25 and has an upstanding portion 4Q provided with suitable hall bearings 43. These bearingsl are provided to minimize lateral pull on the packing gland and adjacent bearing 30 when the device is in operation aml the shaft 37 is belt driven.
Referring to Figures 1 and (i, the numeral t4 designates a plurality of impeller sections adapted to be mounted on the shaft 3l. Each impeller section includes a hub 45 and a pair of spiral blades 4S similar in const ruetion to the, spiral ribs of an ordinary auger. It will be apparent that the blades of each impeller section are oppositely arranged at each point throughout their length. ln the l'orm o t' the invention described the length of each threaded section 33 of the shaft 32 is suflicient to acconnnmlate two ofthe irnpeller .sections 44, the hubs of these sections being threaded in place. Gbviously two of the sections are mounted on each threaded portion 53. and the. inner ends of the inner impeller sections seat against the shoulders formed at the ends of the central shaft. portion 32. Gutward movement of the impeller section is prevented by the inner ends of the head 'eX- tension 29. It will be apparent that the blades of thc impeller sections arranged on the two shaft portions 33 are oppositely pitched.
The casing and most of the other elements illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings are identical with the corresponding elements previously described and need not be referred to in detail. In this form of the invention it will be noted that the sleeves 28 and easing extensions E24 have been eliminated and the heads 9.5 are secured directly against the ends of the easing, it merely being necessary7 to employ shorter bolts E2G. In the modified form of the invention, the shaft 31 is provided with a relatively short threaded section 49 in place of the threaded portion 33, the threaded portion 49 being equal in length to one of the impeller sections 44. In this form of the invention, therefore, it will be apparent that only one of the impellers is employed on `each end of the shaft 31.
1t it is desired to use only one side of the pump, one of the extensions Q8 may be seated in the recess 27 and may contact at its outer end with the adjacent head 25, as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 4.
The operation of the device is as follows:
lt has been found that the pump construction illustrated in Figure 4 is very eticient in operation and only a slight degree of centrifugal force is generated owing to the use of the type of impeller employed. The pump is operated by driving the shaft 37 from any suitable source of power. Water or other liquid is drawn into the casing eX- tension 17 through the inlet pipe 28 and tiows into the cylinder 1G through the passages 2T and the spaces provided between the heads and the ends of the cylinder 1G. As previously stated. the impeller sections on opposite ends ot the shaft are oppositely pitched, and it will be apparent therefore that rotation oi' th(` .shaft is adapted to pump water toward the center of the cylinder l, and thence outwardly through thev opening 1Q and outlet pipe 13.
It it. is found that an additional pumping head is necessary or desirable` the capacity ot the pump readily may be increased without discarding anything but the pump shaft. The heads 25 in the t'orm ot the invention illustrated in Figure 4, may be removed and the shaft witlulrawn. whereupon the shaft 3l illustrated in Figure 5 may be substituted. This shal't is adapted to accommodate two ot the impeller sections as previously stated. One of the extensions 28 is then arranged iu each recess QT and the heads may be replaced and one of the casing extensions 24 arranged against each end ot' the casing. The shaft and heads then may be replaced. when the pump is ready for operation. lVith a plurality of ilnpeller sections mounted on each end of the shaft 3l, it will be apparent that a greatly increased pressure head may be obtained. Obviously, the device is not limited to the use of two impeller sections, it heilig apparent that a longer shaft, and longer extensions Q4 and Q8 may be en'iploycd whereby any desired number of impeller sections may be used. lVhen the form of the pump shown in Figure 4 is employed, and a decreased pumping action is desired, one of theheads Q5 may be removed and one of the sleeves` QS placed in posit-ion as shown in dotted lines in Figure 4. As is well known, an increased pumping action where desired` usually can he obtained only by discarding a pump and replacing it with one of greater capacity. lVith the present invention. however, the increased pumping action readily may be obtained in the manner stated without replacing any of the parts except the .shaft 31.
