TUBE-FORMING DIE.

In the companion application the appa ratus shown combines the effect of drawing dies and hammering dies or pressing dies. In the present instance, the same main dies are used, and in connection therewith the delivery ends of these dies are peculiarly formed so that the material may be completely bent to its entirely finished form even though it be in the form of a closed tube.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of a novel die arrangement wherein completely tubular forms may be produced from strip material by a combined drawing and hammering operation.
In the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a pair of dies suitable for this purpose, and a variet of forms which may be produced by such ies, like characters of reference being employed to illustrate like parts inthe severalviews. In the drawings,

Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fi s. 4 and 5 illustrate certain forms whic may be produced in this manner and the cross section of the dies for producing them, such cross-section being taken on lines corresponding to the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive illustrate sections at successive points in the dies for forming the complete tube and the steps in its formation. In this form of the device, the main dies are indicated at 10 and 11, and. correspond in their structure and function to the dies shown in the companion application, one of these dies suchas the die 10 bein as in the companion application, oscillata le toward and from the remaining die such as the die 11, it not being deemed necessary to illustrate the machinery employed for this purpose. However, the die 11 is continued rearwardly as at 12, and the die 10 has a rearwardly projecting tongue 13 fitting in the rear pore tion 12 of the die 11. It will perhaps be best understood how the device operates if it be assumed that it is desired to manufacture such a tubular form, as is shown in Fig. 1. In this form, the main parts of the dies 10 and 11 act to bend the flat plate 14 up at each edge as shown at 15 in Fig. 2. As this trough shape form passes rearwardl it engages the sides 16 of the auxiliary ben ing member 12 which assists in raising the side portions. The floor of the die 11 at the rear portion is provided with a slot 17 having a rearwardly and downwardly inclined bottom Y18, and the ton ue 13 is corres 0ndingly shaped to fit wit in the slot. nder these circumstances, the central portion of the trough shape partially finished member will be bent; down so thatthe sides will fold up, as shown at 19 in Fig. 3, thus overlap-- ping the portions 15, as also shown in that figure. Thus the rear portions of the dies constitute bending dies, while the front portions constitute forming dies.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious. that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention Without in any way departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not,
therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as proper- 1y come within the scope claimed.
. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
