IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-LAMPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 166,106, dated July 27, 1875 application filed July 9, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD HEINSON HUGH, of Brunswick, in the duchy of Brunswick, in the empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove- Lamps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents avertical section of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the wick-tube.

This invention relates to stove-lamps having a cylindrical wick-tube and wick, and has for its object to deflect a current of air on the flame of the wick, and thus insure a perfect combustion, as well as to deflect the flame and increase its effective area.

My invention consists in an air-deflector in the form of an inverted cone, which is ar ranged in the center of the wick-tube in such a manner that as the air passes up through the tube it is caused to spread outward and to thoroughly commingle with the flame, and

the wick-tube and wick in such a manner as to obstruct the flame and cause a divergence of its rays.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the base of my lamp, which is so constructed that it may support the barrel of a stove or a culinary vessel. In the center of this base is secured a vertical tube, B, which contains a wick, O, the tube passing through the base and dividing it into an annulus, D. From the base, moreover, rises a tube, E, that encompasses the wick G, and which contains the wick'raising wheels F. The tube E is open at top and bottom, and within it is placed the air-deflector G, This deflector has the form of an inverted cone, or of a funnel, while it has its support in a bracket, H. The bracket also forms the support for a disk, I, which is secured to the upper end of a tubular stem, to, that slides on the bracket, and which disk forms a deflector for the flame of the wick C. When the base A is filled with petroleum or other similar liquid, and the wick O is ignited, a current of air is thrown on the flame of the wick from within the tube B by the cone' Gr. Great strength is thus imparted to the flame by reason of the concentration and of the large amount of oxygen fed to it, while at the same time the flame is to some extent spread outward. As the flame comes in contact with the disk I it is further spread or deflected, and the flame is given a large effective area.

By my construction a lamp is obtained which is not liable to generate soot or smoke, nor to give out a noxious or unwholesome smell, which takes place in similar lamps heretofore made.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination,in a stove-lamp, of the air-deflector G, and flame-deflector I, both of the latter being adjustable toward each other upon the bracket, with the bracket H supporting both deflectors, substantially as described, for the object specified.

2. In combination with the tube B, and the encircling tube E carrying the wick-raisingwheels F F, the fixed bracket H, and the air and the flame-deflectors, which are adjustable toward and from each other, and supported by the bracket, substantially as described.
