. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERVIN B. STACK, OF MONROE, NORTH CAROLINA.
INSULATION CUTTER.
Application filed May 9,
It is the object of the invention to provide a new and improved cutting device by the use of which'the insulation may readily be cut from a wire, the construction being such that the device may be easily and in expensively manufactured and hence marketed at small cost.
\Vith the foregoing in view, the invention being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation.
Fig. 2 is an edge View.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the device in operation.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary disassembled perspective view.
The drawing above briefly described, illustrates the preferred form of construction and while this construction will be herein specifically described, it will be understood that minor changes may be made within the scope of the invention as claimed.
The numeral 5 designates a straight metal bar adapted to be gripped in one hand and preferably having an enlargement 6 at its rear end. The front end of the bar 5 turned rearwardly as at 7 and disposed at acute angles to the body portion of said bar. This rearwardly turned end 7 has its rear edge formed with a notch 8 to receive a wire from which the insulation is to be cut, the crotch portion of the notch being convexedly curved at the outer side of the end 7, for smooth engagement with the wire.
Contacting with the inner side of the end 7, is a blade 10 whose rear edge 11 is sharpened and extends across the notch 8. Securing this blade detachably to the end 7 of the bar 5, are two screws 12 which pass through openings 13 in said end 7 and are threaded into openings 14 in the blade 10.. l Vhen the blade requires sharpening, detachment of said blade for this purpose, is permitted by removing the screws .12.
In operating the device, a wire is held in 1927. Serial .No. 189,949.
one hand or in some other suitable way and with the other tudinally of said wire, the latter being then in the notch 8 so that the insulation is held in proper engagement with the blade 10.
This blade cuts the insulation from the wire as will be clear from Fig. 3 and it permits any desired quantity of said insulation to be quickly and easily removed.
By preference, the enlarged end 6 of the bar 5 is formed with a plurality of suitably shaped notches 15 constituting wire-gauging means, but obviously this construction is not essential to proper operation of the insulation removing means.
I claim:
1. A device for cutting insulation from wires comprising a bar adapted to be gripped in one hand, said bar having its front end rearwardly turned and disposed at an acute angle to the body portion of said bar, said bar end being formed with a wire receiving notch in its rear edge, the side walls of said notch being flat and the crotch portion convexedly curved at the outer side of said bar end for smooth engagement with the wir e,a rectangular, removable blade se cured against the inner side of said bar end, said blade having a straight cutting edge disposed across the notch immediately below the convexedly curved crotch portion thereof, and means for detachably securing the blade to said bar end.
2. A device for cutting insulation from wires comprising a bar adapted to be gripped in one front end rearwardly turned and disposed at an acute angle toithe body portion of said bar, said bar end being formed with a wire receiving notch in its rear edge, the sidewalls of said notch being flat, a removable blade secured against the inner side of said bar end, said blade having a straight cut ting edge disposed across the notch immediately below the crotch portion thereof, and means for detachably securing the blade to said bar end.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
