The object of my invention is to soconstruct a Mallet locomotive that the exhaust pipe leading from the rear cylinder of the structure to the exhaust nozzle in the.
smoke-box of the boiler will avoid the mechanism below the boiler. This object I attain by extending theexhaust pipe or pipes through the waist bearer of the locomotive as fully described hereinafter.

1 is a portion of the rear frame of the locomotive, and 2 is the forward frame. These two frames are connected by a pivot 3. 4 is a boiler having a smoke-box 5, and this boiler is rigidly supported on the rear frame and overhangs the forward frame so that the forward frame can move laterally on the pivot 3, independently of the-boiler. The frames and boiler are shown by dotted lines. 6 is the rear cylinder structure which is mounted on the rear frame 1, and 7 is the forward cylinder structure which is mounted on the outer end of the frame 2. a The fore.- going description refers to the ordinary type of Mallet locomotive.
In order to support the overhanging portion of the boiler, a waist bearer 8 is secured to the boiler as shown, and rests on the transverse support 9 secured to the forward frame 2. On the waist bearer are ribs 10, over which extend hook-shaped brackets 11 secured to a transverse support 9. This is an ordinary type of Waist bearer used on the Mallet locomotive.
The exhaust nozzle 12 is locate-din the smoke-box 5 of the boiler, and the exhaust pipe 13 leads from the forward cylinder 7 to the exhaust nozzle. The exhaust pipe is made telescopic as shown, and hasa connection at each end so that it will accommodate itself to the movements of the boiler and the forward frame.
An exhaust pipe 14 leading from the rear cylinder 6 to the exhaust nozzle 12 is rigidly mounted, as it does not move independently of the rear frame of the boiler. The pipe 14in the present instance is made in three sections, 14, 14? and 14. The section 14 leads from the exhaust passage at one side of the cylinder structure 6, and is connected to the section 14 by a joint 15. At this point the pipe 14 is supported by a bracket 16 de pending from the boiler 2. The pipe 14" extends through an opening 17 in the waist bearer 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The pipe is preferably flattened in crosssection, where it extends through the opening 17 in the waist bearer, and the flattened portion preferably extends to the point where the section 14 is cou led to the section 14,the coupling extending through the shell of the smoke-box of the boiler so as to provide a support for the section 14 as well as for the section 14. By extending the pipe 14 through the waist bearer and flattening it at the point shown, the pipe can be arranged close to the boiler and free of any mechanism that is located between the boiler and the forward frame. The section 14 of the pipe 14 is connected to an extension 19 at one side of the nozzle 12. r
In some instances, two longitudinal exhaust pipes 14 14 may extend from the rear cylinder to a point near the nozzle 12", where the pipes are connected to a bifurcated section 18 which is coupled to an extension of the nozzle. In such case, one pipe extends through an opening 17' in one side of the waist bearer and the other pipe extends through the opening 17 in the opposite side as shown in Fig. 4.
I claim 1. The combination, in a Mallet locomotive, of a rear frame; aforward frame pivotally connected to the rear frame; a boiler mounted on the rear frame and extending over the forward frame; a cylinder structure mounted oneach frame; a waist bearer on the boiler; a support for said bearer mounted on the forward frame, the waist bearer havin an opening therein; and an exhaust pipe eading from the rear cylinder structure through the opening and connected to the nozzle in the smoke-box of the boiler.
2. The combination in a Mallet locomotive, of a rear frame; a forward frame pivotally connected to the rear frame; a boiler mounted on the rear frame and extending over the forward frame; a cyclinder structure mounted on each frame; a waist bearer on the boiler; a support for said bearer mounted on the forward frame; an opening in the Waist bearer on each side of the centre thereof; and an exhaust pipe leading from the rear cylinder structure through one of the openings and connected to the nozzle in the smoke-box of the boiler.
