For purposes of illustration, a particular form of mandrel and pressure roll have been sh-own with a finished ring- 52 in operative engagement therewith but of course these parts may be variously modified.
The sides of the ring 52 may be worked during the rolling operation by means oil' side pressure rolls 53 and 54, which are vertical- -y positioned in the guiding chamber 5, the former side roll being revolubly mounted in a bracket 55 havingan adjustable dove-tail connection 56 (Figs. 1 and 2) with a verti cal arm 57 of a supporting member 58. The member 58, which is secured to the main v frame 6 and to the base 8, may be provided with a plurality of radially extending arms 59 each of which carries an adjustable bracket 6l having a size roll 62 revolubly mounted thereon. In operation, a templet (not shown) having the desired maximum diameter, is mount-ed in the position occupied by the ring 52 and the several size rolls 62 are then so adjusted as to engage the peripheryl thereof and clamped in position. rIhus a number of rings of any predetermined diameter inay be obtained.
The side pressure roll 54 may also be mounted in a bracket 63 (Fi gs. l and 3) having a dove-tail connection 64 with a carriage 65 which is disposed intermediate the leg portions 4 ot' the standard 2 and slidably mounted on spaced ways 66 and 67 formed on the main supporting frame 6, whereby the carriage 65 and hence the side pressure roll 54 may be moved toward and from the ring 52. The movement of the carriage 65 may be further guided by providing spaced shoulders 68 and 69 which are adapted to engage respectively shoulders 7l and 7 2 formed on the leg portions 4 of the vertical standard The carriage G5 also serves to extend vertically one wall of the guiding chamber 5 as in the case of the base 8.
lvly invention further contemplates the provision of an outboard bearing 73 (Figs. l, 3 and 4) on the upper side of the movable carriage 65 for the free end of the mandrel 45. The outboard bearing 73 may comprise a sleeve 74 having the opposite ends thereof provided with flanges 75 and 76, the former heilig disposed in frictional engagement with the pressure roll 34. A washer 77, which is disposed between the ring 52 and the adjacent surface ot the iiange 75. may have a detachableV connection therewith. The frictional contact between the sleeve 74 and the mandrel 45 may be such as to cause the rotation of the former, whereby anyftendency of the mandrel 45 to cut or tear the several parts of the outboard bearing 73 may be avoided. The sleeve 73 may be revolubly mounted in movable supporting members 78 and 79 which are disposed between adjacent vertical side walls 8l and 82 ot' the movable carriage 65.
In order to compensate for suoli wear as occurs in the outboard bearingI 73, I provide cam blocks 83 and 84, which may be caused to exert a vertical force on the supporting member 79 by means of an adjusting screw 85 extending between the side walls 8l and 82, as will be understood by those skilled Vin the art.
The carriage 65 may be actuated by means of a cylinder 86, a connecting rod 87 of which is secured to the movable carriage 65 through an adjusting device 88. The latter is designed to provide for small adjustments in the' position ot' the side pressure roll 54 with respect to the coacting pressure roll 53.

may cause the pressure roll 54 to engage the ring 52 with a desired force or it may cause the retraction of the carriage 65 from the position shown in Fig. l to suoli extent that the ring 52 may be readily removed from the mandrel 45 and another inserted in its place. In the experimental development of my invention, some diliiculty was experienced due to the failure of the side pressure rolls 53 and 54 to revolve with the ring 52, particularly when the rolls 53 and 54 were of small diameter, but this has been avoided by posi tively driving the same. To this end, bevel gear- wheels 89 and 91 are mounted onthe lower end oi the side pressure rolls 53 and 54 in mesh with cooperating` bevel gearwheels 92 and 93, resjieetively. Thel bevel gear-wheel 92 may be rigidly secured t0 a horizontal shait 94 which is connected by gear-wheels 95 and 96 to the driving .gearwheel 14. ln orderto provide for `the necessary longitudinal movement ot the carriage 65, the bevel gear-wheel 93 may be splined to the shaft 94, so that the side pressure roll 54 may be positively actuated at all times regardless of the position of the carriage 65.
Vfhen a. ring is to be rolled, the cylinder 2l is actuated to cause a yvertical movement of the shaft 25 to a position where no inter terence occurs with the mandrel 45. The shaft part 27 is then removed and a roll 34 of desired form is mounted on the shaft part 26, the parts being then clamped inposition. The cylinder 86 may also be energized to remove the outboard bearing 73 out of engagement with the mandrel 45 in order that a templet ring may be mounted thereon and theseveral size rolls 62 adjusted accordingly. Ih aringrolling` machine, the `combi` nation with a mandrel, of a cooperating pressure roll, a movable carriage having means constituting an outboard bearing for said mandrel, said means comprising a revoluble vertically-adjustable sleeve mounted in fric-` tional Contact with said mandrel, said sleeve having' a flanged end portion for engaging said roll, and a Washer interposed between said flanged end portion and the ring to be operated on, said washer being detachably secured to said flanged end portion and disposed in frictional Contact with said inandrel.

A ring-rolling machine comprising a pair of spaced standards, of which one is provided with spaced legs, a vertically-movable cross-head so disposed as to be guided by said standards, said cross-head being provided with bearings, and a pressure roll carried by said bearings and extending between the legs of said standards.

A rolling mill comprising a pair of spaced standards, a cross-head movable vertically between said standards, a pressure roll revolubly supported on said cross-head, a cooperating mandrel, and means' operatively connecting said mandrel and said pressure roll, whereby an operative connection may be maintained therebetween for all posi` tions of said pressure roll. y

Apparatus comprising a pair of spaced standards, each standard having verticallypositioned legs provided with guiding surfaces, a cross-head disposed intermediate said standards in contact with said guiding surfaces, said cross-head having bearings extending from the opposite sides thereof intermediate the legs of each standard, a pressure roll revolubly mounted in said bearings, a cooperating roll, and a carriage movable intermediate the legs of one ofsaid standards, said carriage being adapted to serve as an outboard bearing for said last-mentioned roll.

A ring-rolling machine comprising a pair of spaced standards, each standard having vertically-upright spaced legl portions, a cross-head slidaloly disposed intermediate said standards in cngagen'ient with said leg portions, said cross-head having` bearings eX- tending from the opposite ends thereof intermediate the leg portions of each standard, a shaft mounted in said bearing portions and provided With a roll, a cooperating mandrel, the lower portion of one of said standards being formed to provide a support for one end of said mandrel, a carriage for supporting the other end of said mandrel, said carriage being slidably mounted intermediate the leg portions of the other standard, and a side pressure roll revolubly mounted on said movable carriage.

A ring-rolling machine comprising a supporting` frame,spaced standards mounted von said frame, each standard having spaced, vertically extending leg portions, a cross-head slidably mounted intermediate said standards, a pressure roll revolubly mounted in bearings formed in said crosshead, one of said standards being kformed to provide a bearing, a power shaft mounted in said last-mentioned bearing and terminating in a mandrel positioned in cooperative relation to said pressure roll, means for operatively associating said power shaft and said pressure roll for all positions ofthe latter, a carriage slidably mounted intermediate the leg portions of the other of said standards, said carriage constituting an outboard bearing for the free end of said mandrel, a side pressure roll mounted on said carriage, and means for operatively associating said power shaft and saidside pressure roll. 27. Apparatus comprising a pair of spaced standards, of which one is provided with legs, a roll, a carriage movable intermediate said legs and adapted to serve as a bearing for the outboard end of said roll, and a side roll carried by said movable carriage.
28. Apparatus of the class described co1nprising a standard having a pair of spaced legs, a roll-supporting cross-head, a stationary roll, a carriage constituting an outboard bearing for said stationary roll mov' able between the legs of said standard, and a side roll carried by said carriage.

Apparatus of the class described coinprising a standard, a pressure-roll crosshead guided by said standard, a relatively stationary roll, a power-operated carriage constituting one element of a guiding chamber and movable intermediate the legs of said standard, said carriage constituting an outboard bearing for said relatively stationary roll, and a side roll movable With said carriage.

Apparatus comprising a pair of spaced standards, each of Whichis provided with a pair of legs, a roll extending between the legs of one of said standards,-a poweroperated carriage movable between the legs of the other standard and adapted to constitute an outboard bearing for said roll, and side rolls respectively carried by said carriage and one of said standards.

Apparatus comprising a pressure-roll cross-head, a pair of spaced standards constituting a guide therefor, each of said standards having a pair of legs, a roll extending betWeen the legs of one of said standards, the latter standard being formed to provide a journal for said roll, a carriage for supporting the outboard end of said roll and movable between the legs of the other standard into an ineffective position, and side pressure rolls respectively carried by one of said standards and said carriage.

Apparatus `comprising a pressure-roll cross-head, a pair of guiding standards therefor, each of said standards having a pair of legs, a relatively stationary roll, one oi' said standards having a longitudinally extended portion providing a bearing for said roll, a powerfoperated slide constituting an outboard bearing for said roll and having a path of travel intermediate the legs of the other standard, and side pressure rolls respectively carried by said power-operated slide and said longitudinally eX- tended portion.

Apparatus of the class described comprising a standard constituting a guide for a pressure-roll cross-head, said standard having a pair of spaced legs, a relatively stationary roll said standard also having a base portion providing a bearing for said roll, said base portion serving as one ele ment of a guiding chamber, and a side roll secured to said base portion in said guiding chamber.

Apparatus comprising spaced stand` ards, each of which is provided with a pair of legs, a cross-head slidably mounted intermediate said standards, a pressure roll mounted on said cross-head, a stationary roll in co-operative relation to said pressure roll, one of said standards being formed to provide a bearing for said stationary roll, means for operatively associating said stationary roll and said pressure roll for all positions of the latter, a carriage movable intermediate the legs of the other of said standards constituting an outboard bearing :for said stationary roll, and a side pressure roll mounted on said carriage.
35. A pair of power-operated carriages disposed in angular relation, a pressure roll carried by one of said carriages, a roll cooperating With said pressure roll, and a side roll carried by the other of said carriages, the latter carriage being adapted to constitute an outboard bearing forsaid secondmentioned roll.
