IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,100, dated July 27, 1875; application filed June 17, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL HEINEMAN, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification The object of this invention is to provide a metallic cigar-box with a suitable brandingsurface without cutting or perforating the walls of the same.

Metallic boxes, as ordinarily constructed, cannot be used from the fact that manufacturers, when using them, cannot comply with the revenue laws, which require the boxes to be constructed of, or provided with, some material which can be branded with a heated stamp. This objection has been sought to be remedied by cutting through the box an aperture of suitable size, and placing behind it a sheet of wood, upon which the stamp can be branded. This has also proved, objectionable for the reason that it prevents the proper sealing of the box, allowing the cigars to become dry and lose their flavor. By my invention, as is evident, this objection is entirely obviated.

My invention consists in a metallic box having a cavity or recess stamped in its walls, in which is confined a branding-surface of wood or other material, the said material being confined within the recess by means of strips of metal secured at the edges of the recess and overlapping the branding material, as hereinafter specifically described.

In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a per spective view of my improved box; Fig. 2, a sectional view through one of its walls and the recess therein.

The letter A represents a box constructed of tin or other suitable metal, and provided with a cover, B, hinged thereto. 0 represents arecess, which is stamped or struck up on the outside of the box, either in the bottom, sides, or top of the same, at any convenient point. Said recess is formed by means of a male and female die of proper shape, and is of sufficient size to contain a sheet or strip of wood, D, or other material capable of being branded with a heated stamp,as required by law. The said recess and branding material must both be of sufficient size as to readily receive and expose the entire stamp to be branded thereon. The branding material is confined in the recess by means of strips of sheet metal soldered along the edges of the recess, or by clinching it into the recess by bending or pressing the metal at the edges of the recess over the edges of the branding material, so as to securely hold it in place, as wlll be readily understood by workers in sheet metal.

A cigar-box entirely of metal is thus produced, having no openings or apertures in its walls, and provided with a suitable brandingsurface, which will always be exposed to view, enabling the manufacturer, without difficulty, to comply with therequirements of the revenue laws.

A sheet-metal cigarbox having a cavity or recess stamped in one of its walls for receiving a branding material, and metallic strips secured at the edges of the said recess for overlapping the branding-surface and confining in place, substantially as described.
