FRITZ A. ANDERSON, OF MILTON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE BUR/DICK CORPORATION, OF MILTON, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTER.
Application filed December 22, 1921. Serial No. 524,089.
This invention relates to electrical connecters.
It will be explained as applied to a water cooled therapeutic lamp such, for example, 6 as of the type disclosed in my U. S. Patent No. 1,435,193; granted November 14, 1922. One of the objects of this invention is to provide an improved electrical connecter. Another object is to provide a connector W which effectively assists in resiliently supporting the lamp. 7
Other. objects are to provide a support connecter which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, readily applied 15 and used and reliable in operation.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, 20 wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a part of a lamp, the enclosing housing being in sec tion to expose the lamp tube and its im'.-
proved connecter.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the lamp with the bottom of the housing removed.
Fig. 3 is a plan of. the connecter. Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a plan of the blank from which 30 the connector is formed, and
. Fig. 6 is an enlarged section of the clamping nut of the support.
The therapeutic lamp with which this supporting connecter is particularly adapt- :5 ed for use comprises in general a lamp tube or burner 1 and an enclosing housing 2 within and by which the tube is carried. The tube is insertable into and removable from its position through an end of the .0 housing which may be closed by a removable bottom 3. Inasmuch as the tubes and housings are well known', one common type being illustrated in the atent heretofore mentioned, a showing the lower end thereofwhere the connecter is applied will be sufiicient for an explanation of my inrproved connecten Ordinarily the lamp tubes or burners have a cathode 4 Within thetube which is electrically connected to 0 an external terminal 4, commonly in. the
form of a metallic band about the tube adjacent its cathode end. Lateral bracing of the tube is provided by a number of resilient fingers 5 suitably secured to the hous- 5 mg.
Tube 1 is supportedand connection is made to its cathode connecter band 4 by a combined support and terminal. This sup port and connecter has an ex'pansible and contractible split clamping ring 6 which sur'rounds'and closely enibraces the terminal band 4 of tube 1. Ring 6 has a'pair of mounting lugs 7 and 8 projecting'ol'ltwardly and parallel from opposite edges thereof. The free ends 9 and 10 of ring 6 are bent so as to assume a substantially parallel relation and are provided with corresponding holes fora bolt 11. Lugs 7 and'8 are provided with elongated holes 11 and 12, respectively. A slit 13, extendsbetween hole 13 and the edge of lug 8.
Clamping ring 6 may be formed from a single punching of sheet metal such as shown in Fig. 5. The blank and theopenings therethrough may be formed in one operation. Bendingthe blank in the region of the dotted lines of Fig. 5 ,serves to give the clamp its finished structure as shown in Fig. 3 and 4. 'j
A clamping nut 14 serves to holdthe connecter in place. The central zone of nut 14 is of reduced diameter to form a pair of heads 15 and 16. The forward end of the bore of nut 14 is enlarged and the rest of the bore is threaded. Clamping ring 6 and nut 14 are assembled together by opening the hole 12 at-the slit 13 and positioning the reduced intermediate section of the nut within hole 12 of lug 8. This assembly may be accomplished by opening up slit 13 far enough to receive the nut. When the slit is again substantially closed nut 14 is loosely retained by the-clamping ring.
Nut 14 is adapted to be screwed upon the projecting end of a threaded stud 17. Stud 17 is electrically connected to' one of the lamp electric terminals and is firmly held in position on a suitable support in the housing by a nut 18. The enlarged part of the bore of nut 14 assists in the ready'positioning of the nut on stud 17. Whenthe' nut is turned home on stud 17 the electrical conin rotectin the lam a "ainst breaka ew P g P g a:
The elongated holes in lugs 7 and 8, allowing some variation in the relativepos'itions of the lamp tube and stud 17, facilitate the ders the support shock'absorbent and assists installation of the tube within its housing.
Since the clamping ring and nut of the supporting connecter are assembled as aunit the danger of losing the nut or misplacing it when a lamp tube is being changed is reduced. The proper positioning of the con necterin the lamp housing is also made much easier as the nut is always approximately 1 then inserted into the housing and nut 14 is turned upon stud 17 The elongated holes in lugs 7 and 8, the enlarged end of the bore of the nut and the fact that the nut is approximately positioned when the tube is inserted all contribute to the easy and rapid placement and connection of the lamp.
Having described my invention what. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A connecter tube with an electrode therein and an external terminal connected to the electrode, comprising a split ring for embracing the lamp tube and engaging its terminal, means for clamping the ring about the tube, a pair of resilient outwardly extending lugs formed integral with said ring, said lugs being l0n gitudinally slotted, and a, nut held by one of said lugs so as to be capable of rotative and limited axial movement, and adapted to for a lamp which has a.
for clamping the other of said extensions to a threaded support.
3. A lamp support andelectrical connecter comprising a ring for embracing the lamp tube and its external terminal, a pair of perforated lugs projecting from the ring, and a nut loosely and rotatably retained in the perforation of one of said lugs for attaching the other of said lugs to a threaded support.
4. An electrical connecter for a lamp tube equipped with an external terminal, comprising a clamping ring for encircling the tube and electrically en aging the terminal thereof, a pair ofspacecf apart lugs projecting outwardly from opposite edges of the ring and having reglstering holes therethrough, and a nut having a restricted portion intermediate its ends and enlarged heads adjacent each end, the restricted ortion being loosely positioned within the ole of one of the lugs and removal therefrom being prevented by the heads, said nut being internally threaded to attach the ring to a current conducting support.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subs scribed my name.
