INVENTOR Howard Y. Hodge WITNESSES Patented Feazs 192s.
UNITED STATES 1,660,793 PATENT OFFICE.
- HOWARD Y. HODGE, OF ELK VIEW, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO DIXIE VENTILA- TOB COMPANY INCL, OF KENNETT SQUARE, PENNSYLYANIA, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
I Application iiled October 6, 1927.. Serial 1T0. 234,320.
My invention relates to ventilators of the type adapted to be installed in windows and other openings and has for its principal object to provide a ventilator of this type which is adjustable as to length so that it may be adapted to openings of various sizes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ventilator which will not obstruct the light entering the room and which may also.
exclude a large amount of dust and dirt.
These and various other objects and advantages will be apparent'from the following description, to be read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ventilator embodying my invention, as same would appearwhen mounted on-a window;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of one ofthe ventilatorfsections shown in Fi re 1 but a viewing same from the opposite si e; certain parts being broken away.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the ventilator shown in Figure 1 but viewing same from the opposite side.
Figure- 4 is a transverse sectional view,
taken on line 4.4 on Figure 3.
Fi re 5 a similar view taken on line 5-5 v on F1gure-3, and
Figure 6 a fragmentar sectional plan view taken on line 6-6 on igure 4.
' The embodiment shown in t e drawings is provided with a pair of rigid end pieces 11 and 11 which are opposite .hand to one another and provided with upwardly extending ears 12 havin apertures 13 by means of which the ventilator may be swingably mounted in a window casing, as-by screws 14 preferably with the edge 15 of each en piece in close proximity to the side rails of 0 the bottom sash and the curvature of the tops of ears 12 should be such'that the ventilatpr may beswung on screws14, if so desire The body parts of the end pieces are substantially triangular and agulde 16 hasvone end secured to the end piece 11 at the apex of the; triangle and overlaps a guide 16 similarly secured to end piece 11. The'two. guides are held in sliding engagement with I 60 one another by a pair of casings 17 which are preferably made of thin metal and I shaped as shown in Fi 'ures 4 and 5. The outstanding portions of guides 16 and 16?- are reduced inthickness to form auxil- VENTILATOR.
The upper side of auxiliary guide 18*? is cut away to form a track 21 and the under side of auxiliary-guide18 is cut away .to form a similar track for accommodating a portion of one edge of a pair of screens 22 and 22*. Screen 22 may be secured to end piece 11 in any suitable manner but has been shown as having itsend secured in a groove formed therein by means of a wedge 23 and has a portion of its side fixed' in guide 16 in a suitable groove-which forms the extension of track-21. Sgreen 22 is similarly secured to end piece 11 and guide 16 so that, when the two ventilator sections are assembled, the free ends of screens 22 and 22 are held insliding engagement with one another between auxiliary guides 18 and 18 while deflector plates 19 are held in sliding engagement with one another by having one edgeof each slidably mounted in groove 20.
In order that the unconfinedcorners-of screens 22 and 22 may not sag below the normal plane of the screens, I'preferably providea clip 24'on each corner in-order'to hold it in sliding contact with. 'its' companion screen. Casings 17 have been shown-of a length to abut one another when the ventilator is collapsed to its shortest length but this'was done fgr illustrative purposes only and in order-to expose. auxiliary guides 18 and 18 as these casings may readily be made to overlap one another approximately the same distance as screens 22 and 22* and plates 18 and 19 overlap one another so that the ventila or will have a finished appearance when extended to fit any size of window 'tically no dust or dirt can enter the room through the ventilator.- Heretofore, it has been necessary to build ventilators especially for each window but. my improved ventilator may be made in standard sizes so that it may be quickly and easily mounted on any size window within its range and thus provide a ventilator at a fractionlof the cost of one made es ecially for. a window and it is also found t at but two sizes of. these ventilators are necessary to fit practically all sizes practical application thereof, it is to be understood that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and hence I- do not wish to limit n self to the construction set forth, but consi er that I am at liberty to make such changes, alterations and applications as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims. I
I claim I 1. A ventilator of the character described including end pieces, deflectorplates carried by the end pieces, and means secured to the end pieces and one edge of the deflector plates for holding the'plates in sliding engagement with one another. 1 i
.12. A ventilator "including end pieces, a
guide on each end piece, a. deflector plate I secured to each end piece and guide, and
means holding the guides in sliding engagement with one another.
3. A ventilator including end pieces, a guide on each end-piece, a deflector plate secured to each end piece and guide, a screen secured to each end piece and guide, and means'holding the guides in sliding engagement with one. another. a
overlapping one another, a pair of deflectorplates secured in the end pieces and guides and slidable in one 'ofthe auxiliary guides, screens secured in the end pieces and guides and slidable between the auxiliary guides, and means holding the auxiliary guides in sliding engagement with one another.
6* A ventilator includinga pair of end pieces, ears on the end pieces for swingably mounting the ventilator on the sides of an opening, a guide'secured to each. end piece,
auxiliary guides formed on the guides and overlapping one another, a air, of deflector plates secured in the end pleces and'guides and slidable in one of the auxiliary guides,
screens secured in the end pieces and guides and slidable between thev auxiliary guides, and casings on the guides for holding the auxiliary guides in sliding engagement with one another. I
7. A ventilator including. a pair of end pieces; a uide secured to each end piece; a pair ,of eflector plates secured to the end piecesiand guides andslidablein one of the guides; screens secured in the end pieces and guides and slidable between the guides, and means holding the guides in sliding engagement with each other.
8. A ventilator including a pair of end pieces, grooved guides secured to. the end pieces and overlappin each other. a deflector plate secured to each end piece and guide and slidable in the groove in the other guide,
and means for holding the guides in sliding engagement with one another.
9. A ventilator including a pair of end:
pieces, grooved guides secured to the end pieces and overlapping each other, a deflector plate secured to each end piece and guide and slidable in the groove in the other guide, and a casing secured to each guide and partiallyrencircling a; art of the overlapped portions of both gui es.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HOWARD Y. HOD-GE.
