This invention relates to hoisting mechanisms. V-
It has for its object-to provide an mproved hoisting mechanism. A further object is to provide improved means for guiding a: cable on or off the drum means.. A further objectis to provide improved cable guiding means whereby the hoist'canbedisposed in different positions yet allow the cable in either position of the hoist to be guided. Another object is to provide improved cable guiding means havin elements which are common'to any one of t 1e plurality of positions in which the hoisting mechanism might be placed. A still further object is to provide an extremely simple means whereby the cable guides can be changed from one position to another by'removing relatively few elements.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration two forms which my invention may assume in practice.

Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the hoist shown in another position and illustrating a modified form of cable guide.
In the illustrative embodiment of my invention, I have shown the same in connection with a usual type of hoisting mechanism herein shown of the double'drum type comprising a usual base 1 having standards 2 and 3, and a suitable actuating motor 4 disposed between drums 5 and 6 which are rotatably carried by the motor casing and standards. It will of course be understood that any similar type of hoisting mechanism might be used and that my invention consists in the arrangement of suitable means for guiding cables 7 and 8 on and oil the drums 5 and 6. It will also be obvious that.

The upper U-shaped member 10 can also be held by a central. 21111.17 connected thereto. by a bolt'18'and' tothe motor casing as by an eye.bolt-19, a suitable lock nut 20being used to positively hold the eye bolt andarm 17 but it will be understood this is merely an auxiliary attachment. It will be noted that the lower U-shaped member 11 is bent inwardly as at 21 to allow the exhaust plpe 22 to lead from the motor. In order to guide the cables 7 and 8, parallel and transversely spaced rollers 22 and 23 are rotatably mounted upon shafts 24 fixed in. the members 10 and 11 as by nuts 25. It is to be noted that the adjacent sides of each set of rollers 22 and 23 are spaced inwardly of the flanges 26 of the respective drums, thusin- .suring that the cable will not run over the flanges, as might happen in case a load is being pulled from a horizontal angle. The form thus far described is I particularly adapted when the hoist is mounted in a horizontal position, but when mounted in a vertical position as shown in Fig. 3, and the cables 7 and 8 are taken ofl in the same general direction as in Fig. 2, it will be seen that the guide rollers 22 and 23 must have a different position. To accomplish this I have shown a second set of brackets 30 adapted to be fixed as by bolts on the standards at a point opposite to that shown in Fig. 2. These brackets, which can be removed or left on the standards as desired, have a horizontally disposed arm 31 termimating in lugs 32 through which the bolts 12 or 13 may pass to engage the rectangular frame 9 as shown in Fig. 1. In this second position the U-shaped frame 10 of the frame 9 is held by an auxiliary arm 33'fixed to the frame 9 as by the bolt 18,,while the other end thereof is fixed to the motor casing as by a bolt 34..
It will thus be seen that in the operation of my device to change the guiding rollers from one position to another will only necessitate removal of the bolts 12 and 18 and interchanging of the brackets 14:, 15 and 30 and the arms 17 and 33 if it is desired to use them. The same guiding rollers, supporting frame therefor, bolts and bolt holes being used in either position, thusprovide an extremely inexpensive arrangement and one retion may assume in practice, it will be -understood that these forms of the same are shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims;
What I claim as new and by Letters Patent is: i

The combination with a hoist having a supporting frame and a cable winding drum, of cable guiding means for cooperation with said drumco-mprising end brackets attached to said frame, U-shaped members having desire to secure parallel portions and overlapping end portions, said end port-ions being bolted to said brackets, guiding rolls journaled on bolts connecting said. parallel portions, and means connected to said frame for bracing said U- shaped members. i 2. The combination with a hoist having a supporting frame and cable Winding drums, said frame having end supports and a central support, of cable guiding means for cooperation with. said drums comprising end brackets attached to said end supports, U shaped members extending between and attached to said brackets and having parallel portions, guiding rolls carried by said parallelportions, and means extending between said central sup-port and one of said U- shaped members for bracing the latter.
