Application filed March 10,1927. Serial No. 174,141.
Th s inventionrelates to a new and useful device in the nature of a shirt button particularly adapted for removably attaching a collar to a shirt and for the purpose of removably attaching the shirt bands of a shirt together. V
'The object of the invention is to provide a shirt button of simple, novel construction, inexpensive to manufacture and apply.
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a shirt and collar embodying myimproved shirt button.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view ofmy improvedshirt button proper as embodied in the device.
Fig. 3 is a similar V1eW of the coacting stud member proper as embodied therein.
Fig. 4 is a similar view to that shown in Figure 2, illustrating the snap fastener proper as combined with my'improved device.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the coacting snap fastener engaging member as embodied therewith.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged longitudinal central sectional View illustratingdetails of Fig. 3.
As here embodied my improved shirt button consists of a stud member and coacting' button proper. The stud member proper has an extended portion 10 of tapered cylindrical construction, and provided with a plurality of annular grooves 11, preferably slightly undercut. The stud member proper is provided with projecting elements 12 and 13, adapted to be bent or crimped at approximately right angles thereto, as a means of positioning the stud member proper in a shirt band 14, which is provided with an opening or aperture to receive the extended portion 10. The stud member proper be-- .ing positioned in the. said shirt band by abutting the co-acting ring member .15, provided with an axial aperture adapted to receive the extended portion 10. The ring member 15being crimped to the stud to permanently hold these parts in place.
The shirt button proper comprises an ex- .tended portion 16, provided with an enlarged head 17, or extremity. The extended portion 16 is of hollow construction having an axial aperture 18, or cavity, adapted to slidably receive thevabove mentioned extended portion 10 of the stud member'proper. The
axial aperture 18 is provided with'raised or V inwardly protruding portions 19, adaptedto engage in the above mentioned annular grooves 11 of the extended portion 10, as a means of removably attaching the stud mem ber proper to the shirt button proper.: The extended portion .16 of the; shirt button proper is provided with an enlarged element 20. The collar '21 is provided with an aperture or opening adapted to receive theextended portion 16. The shirt button proper is attached to the collar 21 by means of the enlarged element 20, and the co-acting ring member 22, provided with an axial aperture adapted to receive the extendedportion 16. The ring member22 being crimped thereto.
The above describedconstruction is such aswill permit the stud and button proper to engage each other. The extended p'orti0nl6 time;
may be inserted through an aperture in the free extremity of a collar band, and slidably engageable' in the axial aperture 18 as a means of attaching the collar 21 to the shirt band is the extended portion 10 of the stud member. It should be understood that the free extremity of the collar 21 is provided with an aperture or opening adapted to be engaged by the enlarged head 17, as a means of attaching the collar to the shirt band.
111 Figure 5, I have shown the socket member 23 of a snap fastener attached to the rear of the collar 21 by means of the ball member 24 provided with an axial aperture adapted to receive the socket member 23, which is crimped thereto. I
The ball member 24 which is the coacting part of the snap fastener is attached to the rear of the shirt band 14, by means of a ring member 25, provided with an axial aperture adapted to receive theball member 24, which is crimped thereto. The ball member 24 isadapted to engage in the socket member 23 as a means of removably attaching the collar 21 at the rear thereof to the rear ofthe shirt band 14. 1 It should be understood that similar ball and socket members 24 and 23 may be employed to removably attach the shirt bands together, as shown in Figure 1.
In Figure 6 of the accompanying drawing, Ihave shown an enlarged detailof the above mentioned extended portion 10"of the stud member proper which is provided with a longitudinal elongated slot 26, and
"has a tapered aperture or recess, adaptedto receive a similar shaped portion 27'of the:
expansion member 28. The above mentioned tapered aperture'is provided with a lower threaded recess 29, adapted" to receive the threaded extremity 30 of the expansion member 28. The expansionmember 28 is provided witha slot 31, adapted to receive a coin, pin, or the like, as a means of threadedly attaching the expansion member 28 in the expanded portion 10 of the stud member proper, so as to expand the said extended portion so as to insure the engagement of the extended portion 10, in the above mentioned axial recess 18 of the shirt button proper. Attention is directed that after continued use the stud member 10 becomes too loose in the aperture 18, then advantage maybe taken of the adjustable feature of the stud extended portion tapered and formed with a plurality of annular grooves so as to be engageable with thesaid irregular axial aperture, said extended portion bein formed with a longitudinally elongated slot, and with a tapered aperture provided with a lower threaded recess, and an expansion member engaged in the tapered aperture, said expansion member having a threaded extremity engaging the said lower threaded recess.
2. The combination with a shirt button proper having an irregular axial aperture, of a stud member proper provided with an extended portion, engageable with the said irregular axial aperture, said extended portion being formed with a longitudinally elongated slot, and witha tapered aperture provided with a lower threaded recess, and an expansion member engaged in the tapered aperture, said expansion member having a threaded extremity engaging the said lower threaded recess.
In testimony whereofT have aflixed my signature.
