Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL NIGOLSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
RAIL FOR STREET-RAILROADS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,605, dated February 10, 1857.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL NicoLsoN, ofV Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Rail for Street-Railways; and I do hereby declare the same is fully described and represented in the following specication and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l represents a transverse section of the rail in ordinary use. Figs. 2 and 3, are transverse sections of my improved rail. Fig. 4, is a top view of it. j
Instead of forming the upper surface of the rail with a general transverse section as seen at a, b, c, (l, e, f, g, in Fig. l, and arranging it with reference to the street level, A, as indicated in such figure, I prefer to form it more as exhibited at a, c, d, e, f, in Figs. 2 or 3.
In Fig. 4, the rail is represented in top view with paving on each side of it. In said igure, R, lexhibits the rail it being constructed with recesses or indentations, k, 7c, 76,'YZ, Z, Z, formed in its opposite sides andso as to receive paving blocks or stones B B,
the rail under such circumstances being caused, to extend between the adjacent paving blocks so as to break joints, as it were with them, or so that, when a road carriage wheel is running across the junction of the rail and pavement, it may run over the rail and paving blocks alternately. By this construction of the rail with reference to the pavements deep ruts or grooves will be pre vented from being formed in the pavement and close to the outer or inner edge of the rail. Each recess on one side of the rail I arrange between two recesses on the opposite side thereof as shown in the drawing or figure last mentioned, the same being in order to maintain equality of width, and strength in the rail at every part of it. IVere each recess on one side of the rail placed directly opposite another. recess on the opposite side of the rail, the strength of the rail would be much impaired.
I claim- My improved street rail constructed essen tially as described, or with recesses in its side or sides, for the reception of the paving-blocks each recess of one side being opposite either a recess of the other side or space between two recesses of the other side essentially as hereinbefore explained.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 8th day of October A. D.
SAMUEL NICOLSON. Witnesses:
