B. J. STEVENS PENCIL HOLDER FOR TELEPHONE INSTRUMENTS File 25, 1927 QTTORNEY Patented Feb. 28, 1 928. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERTBAM I; STEVENS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO GOOD-AD, INC., A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
PENCIL HOLDER FOB TELEPHONE INSTRUMENTS.
Application filed April 25, 1927. Serial No. 186,845.
My invention relates to a device which is made in the form of an attachment to be applied to the common form of telephone instruments, whereby an ordinary lead pencil may be conveniently supported thereon.
Convenience in having lead penc l at hand during telephone conversations, will be readily recognized and the main object 01% my invention is to provide a simple form of pencil holding attachment, which can be readily attached and supported on a telephone instrument, and which supports a pencil in convenient position for use. 0
Another object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the class described, which is constructed from a single blank of metal which can be easily formed into the required shape for the purposes desired.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter from the following descrlption and drawings.
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only- Fig. 1 is a face view of a pencil holding attachment, embodying a form of my invention, showing the same mounted on a telephone instrument.
Fig. 2 is a. side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan -view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a face view of the blank used in forming the attachment and Fig. 5 is a modified form of same.
11 designates generally a form of my pencil holding attachment mounted on the stem 12 of a telephone instrument, the stem 1.2 being supported on a base 13 and such instrument being equipped with a receiver 14 and transmitter 15. The attachment comprises a body portion 16, having side extensions 17 and 18, such body portion 16 and side members or extensions 17 and 18 being bent in circular form of slightly less diameter than the diameter of the stem 12 of the telephone instrument, the ends 19 and 20 of the extensions 17 and 18 respectively being turned sli 'htly outwardly as shown in Fig. 3. The en 18 terminates in a rolled receiver 21 of frusto conical shape, lar er at its upper end than its lower end and s aped to receive the sharpened end 22 of a pencil 23, to support the pencil therein, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
25 designates a plate which may be secured to the body portion by means of screws, rivets or clips 26, and which plate may be used for displaying advertising matter thereon, although it is to be understood that advertising matter may be laced directly on the body portion 16 of t e attachment, if so desired.
The attachment is referably made of sheet metal from a single lilank, as shown in Fig. 4, in which the part designated by the numeral 30 is rolled to form the pencil receiver heretofore described, the metal used being preferably of a nature which permits some spring to permit suflicient frictional contact with the telephone instrument, to retain the same thereon, at the same time permitting ready attachment and removal there from.
'It is further to be noted that the attachment engages the stem of the instrument slightly over half the diameter of the same, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thereby more firmly holding the same in place.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 clips 26 are formed in the stamping operation, which clips may be bent over the plate 25 to hold the same in place.
I claim as my invention:
1. A pencil holding attachment for tele' phone instruments comprising: an integral sheet metal member, curved to engage the stem of such instrument and consisting of a body portion and side portions; one of said side portions being extended laterally and rolled to form a hollow frusto conical receiver shaped to receive the sharpened end of a. pencil.
2. A pencil holding attachment for telephone instruments comprising: a sheet metal member, curved to engage over more than half the diameter of the stem of such instrument, and consistin of a stem engaging portion and a penci receiving portion shaped to protect the sharpened end of a pencil.
3. A pencil holding attachment for telephone instruments comprising: a sheet metal member, curved to engage the stem of such instrument and consistin of a body portion and side portions; one 0% being extended to form a receiver adapted to receive the sharpened end of a pencil.
4. A pencil holding attachment for telephone instruments comprising: a sheet metal member shaped to conform to the stem of said side portions 10 1,aeo,ssa
such instrument, and a single extension formed on such member, shaped to receive the pointed end of a pencil.
5. A blank for forming apencil 5 attachment comprising:
a strip metal, having a body portion and tions on each side of the body por holding of sheet side portion, one
an enlarged of said side portions havin oped frustrial
