ROTARY PUMP.
1 Application filed August 6, 1926. Serial No. 127,586.
Our invention relates to rotary pumps for gathering mine water and similar heavyduty services.
Among the objects of the invention are to 6 provide such a pump wit-h a seal so proportionedand lined as to withstand the heavv duty imposed thereon; to provide means for taking up endthrust wear; to provide bearings of such liberal'dimensions as to Prevent the rotor and idler from getting out of true; and to provide glands so constructec as to facilitate repacking without disturbing the aforesaid bearings.
An illustrative embodiment of our inven- 5 tion is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein: V
Fig. liis a top plan view ofthe complete pump and one type of drive motor therefor;
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the pump proper;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line A-A of Fig.2;
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 13-13 of Fig. 2 showing the. pump proper in end elevation; and
Fig. 5 is a cross section of one of the dust-proof bearings.
In the drawings 1 is the pump proper which consists of a casing or cylinder mem- 12'.) her 2 and a cover or cylinder head 3 secured together in the usual manner and provided with a removable liner 4 which is made of special alloy for resisting the action of acids and other deleterious elements. Cover 3 is provided with the usual integrally formed therewith crescent member or divider 5. Cylinder 8 is formed with feet 26 by which it is fastened to the base 25. Within said casing is the rotor or revolving piston 6 mounted on the main drive shaft 7 which is driven by suitable means such as a train of gears or a chain drive indicated at 8. This driving means derives its power from the motor 9. If desired this driving mechanism may be encased in an oiltight cover and may run in oil. The rotor 6 has inte gral gear teeth 29 spaced at their base a distance equal to the thickness of the teeth. of the idler 10. Also within said casing 2 is the idler 10, above referred to, which is mounted 011 a long bearing shaft 11.
Shafts 7 and 11 are supported at their outer, ends by suitable bearings 12 and 13 respec-' tively. Thrust bearings 14: and 15 are of heavy duty type providing for both radial and thrust loads and run in a dustproof oil bath.
The means for repacking without disturbing the bearings consists of split gland members 18 and 19 inserted in cylinder 2 and cylinder head 3 and provided with com-- pression' means supported by elementslt and 17 by which 18 and 19 are operated by suitable screws 20 whereby the packing material 21 is compressed within the liners Between bearing bracket 16 and easing 2 are thin shims 23 to take up the end wear of rotor 6 and idler 10. Lead seals 2 are provided which are poured and calked in -w th the liner 4 111 place. This allows the liner to be replaced without removing the lead seals.
The casing, or'cylinder, and the cover, or cylinderhead are. made of bronze metal to withstand the corrosion tendency of the fluids pumped. It is obvious however, that the inventive idea is the same irrespective of thematerial of which the pump is made. This is true of all wearing members'of our pump. a i
The pump operates in the manner well known to the art, the rotation of rotor 6 intermeshing with idler 10 causing the fluid to flow into suction intake, and to be discharged through delivery 27. From the construction shown, it is obvious that it is immaterial to the operation of the device in which direction the rotor is driven, except that reversing the direction of the rotor reverses the flow of the liquid.
Having thus described our invention, we claim: s v
1. A rotary pump comprising a cylindrical casing provided with intake and dis charge ports, a cover therefor provided with a crescent keeper, a renewable liner fitting the inner wall of said cylinder, sealing means between the liner and the cylindrical casing, a hollow rotary piston fitted within said cylinder and provided with gear teeth, an idler mounted within said hollow piston and provided with gear teeth engaging the gear teeth of said piston, and means for driving said rotary piston.
2. A rotary pump comprising a cylindrical casing provided with intake and discharge ports, a cover therefor provided with a QmSQBnt keeper, a renewable liner fit ting the inner wall of said cylinder, Calkalole plastic-lead seals between the liner and the cylindrical casing, a hollow rotary piston fitted within said cylinder and provided with gear teeth'engaging the gear teeth of said piston, an idler within said piston having teeth engaging the teeth of the piston, and means for driving said rotary piston.
3. A rotary pump comprising a cylindrical casing provided with intakeand discharge ports, a cover thereforprovided with a crescent keeper, a renewable liner fitting the inner wall of said Cylinder, lead seals,
positioned between the liner and cylindrical casing, said seals being capable of being recalked IlPOJl renewing the liner, a hollow rotary piston titted within said cylinder and provided with gear teeth, an idler mounted within saidhollow piston and provided with gear teeth engaging'the gear teeth of said piston, and means for driving said rotary piston.
41-. A; rotary pump comprising a cylindrical (aising, flanged at one end and provided with intake and discharge ports, a cover therefor provided with a crescent keeper,
and with a flange registering with aforesaid 5 A rotary pump comprising a flanged cylindrical casing provided with intake and discharge ports, a cover therefor provided wit-ha crescent keeper and with a flange registering with the 'aforesaid fian'ge," a flanged renewable liner fitting the inner wall of' said cylindrical casing, the liner flange clamped between the cylinder and cover flanges, a hollow rotary piston fitted within said cylindrical casing and provided with gear teeth, an 1dler mounted withln said hollow piston and provided with gear therefor provided with a crescent keeper,
and with. a flange registering with aforesaid flange, a flanged renewable liner fitting'the inner wall of said cylinder, the flange of the liner being engaged between the flanges of the casing and the cover, calkahle seals between the liner and the casing, hollow rotary piston fitted within said cylinder and proyided with gear teeth, an idler mounted within said hollow piston and p'royided with gear teeth engaging the gear teeth of said piston, and means for driving said rotary piston. i In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
