Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEErcE.
THOMAS W. HOUGHIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN P-OCKET GAS-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 166,008, dated July 27, 1875 application filed April 23, 1875.
To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that I, THoMAs W. HoUcHIN, of the city of New York, N. Y., have invented a new and useful cooking implement, which I call a Pocket Gas-Stove, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my pocket gas-stove, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
The same letter of reference is applied to the same part in both figures.
The object of this invention is to supply a cooking implement which can readily be applied to any gas-burner, and which will afford a convenient means of boiling water or preparing a small quantity of food by either broiling or boiling in any room where a gas-burner is accessible. It consists of a small metallic chamber or box, in which is inserted a gasthimble adapted to flt any 'ordinary burner, said box being covered at top with wiregauze, and provided with appliances for holding a small gridiron or boiler, and with gauze-covered apertures below to admit air for supplying oxygen to the gas and to prevent the communication of flame from the gas burning on top of the gauze to that within the box or chamber, all as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
yIn the drawings, A denotes the metallic box or chamber, which I usually make in the form` of the segment of a cylinder, as represented. In the bot-tom of this box is inserted a thimble, B, adapted to it any ordinary gas-burner, and provided with a number of apertures at top intended to distribute the gas equally over the wire-gauze G, with which the top of the chamber is covered. I prefer to use steel-wire gauze, because it does not, impart any disagreeable flavor to food cooked over it, andl is free from poisonous properties. Near the bottom of the box are a number of openings, a a a a, which I cover with gauze (l C. These openings are for the admission of air, and I cover them with gauze, so that, in case there should be an excess of gas in. the chamber, which escapes through these holes, the gas inside the box would not become inliamed by communication with the burning gas on top of. wire-gauze G. To the top of the chamber I attach either side rods R or swinging legs L, for the purpose of supporting, at the proper height over the flame, a small boiler or other cooking utensil.
The boiler may be made of such size as to receive the box A and a small gridiron, so that the whole apparatus can be packed in a small box of a size to be conveniently carried in the pocket or stowed in a traveling-sack.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pocket gas-stove hereinbefore described, the same consisting of the combination, with the gas-thimble B, of the metallic chamber A, covered with wire-gauze or perforated metal G, and provided with gauze-covered openings a, and with suitable devices for supporting cooking utensils, all constructed, arranged, and operating as and for the purpose speciiied.
l The above specication of my said invention signed and witnessed at Washington this 22d day of April, A. D. 187 5.
