Application filed December 24, 1926. Serial No. 156,932.
and design, universal in its adaptation and. use, effective in 1ts operation and attractive.
in appearance.
My combined'porch lantern and number plate support is a unitary structure adapted to be fastened in place as a single unit. It
is capable of removably receiving different number plates and supporting them in such a manner that the light from the lanternwill be thrown directly on the plate to render the number fully visible. I
Other advantages and meritorious features of my improvement will more fully appear from the following specification do: scribing the illustrative embodiment shown in the drawing, from the drawing, and from the appended claim.
In the drawing: Fig 1 is a front elevation of my improvement. a
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of a fragment of my lantern. v
My porch lantern comprises a back plate 10 which is provided with an aperture 12 through which a supporting pin extends to fasten the lantern. in place in face abutting relationship with the wall of the building. The backplate is recessed as at 14 arund the aperture 12 to accommodate the'electric wiring connection. The hack plate isprovided at its upper end with an overhanging shelf It), the bottom of which is adapted. to receive a light socket 18. A forward wall 20 and opposed side walls 22 depend from the edges of the shelf and are secured together and to the haclr plate as illustrated to form with the back plate a lantern shroud or hood open at the bottom. These wall portions are shown as com rising decoras tive metal grills 2d and interlorly positioned translucent and reflective plates 26. The wall portions preferably flare as shown in the drawing. A ca piece hr a crown 28 is arranged over the s elf 16 as illustrated.
The back plate is provided at its lower end with a transverse extension 30, having a transverse opening 32,- which extension is here shown as being rigidly secured to the back plate by an upright tongue 34 disposed within a seat formed in the back late and fastened securely therein. Wing like shoulders 36 extend on opposite sldes of the tongue and engage with the under portion of the back plate. The transverse extension of the back plate may, if desired, be cast of one piece with the upper portion of the back plate.
The transverse extension of the back plate is recessed on the rear side around the open- .ing 32 to provide a seat for a number plate 38. This seat for the number plate is in the form of a flange or shoulder 40 surrounding the aperture through the transverse extension and is arranged in a plane extending angularly with respect to the normal plane of the back plate and substantially parallel to the forward wall 20 of the lantern shroud so that the number plate when secured upon its seat projects downwardly and forwardly in order that the light rays reflected from the lantern and the forward wall thereof will fall directly upon the number plate.
What I claim is:
In a'combined porch lantern and number plate support, an upright back plate provided at the-top with an integral forwardly extending shelf, walls depending therefrom to form a lantern shroud. a cap integral with the shelf and surmounting thereover, a light socket carried by the shelf and extending therethrough into the space below the cap, a number plate support having a laterally extending opening and recessed upon its rear face about the margin thereof, a number plate for the opening seated upon the marginal recess thereabout, an upward extension. on the support terminating in a tongue ex tending over and upon and seated within a depression in the back plate and having shoulders on opposite sides of the tongue abutting the lower edge of the back: late.
In testimony whereof, I. Ronnn'r am ASPINWALL, sign this specification.
ROBERT SAYER ASPI'N'WALL.
