FLEXIBLE-METAL WEATHER STRIP.

My present invention has to do with Weatherstripping and more particularly the weather stripping of'sliding sashes whichare liable to swell and shrink;and it ha's for its 'ob ect the provision of a flexible metal weather strip which while it is simple and inexpensive in construction and is susceptible of ready installation, is adapted to accommodate itself to all conditions of the sash so as to insure a free actin sash and at the same time exclude the weat 1er, To'the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed. In the accompanying drawings, forming I part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a face view of a portion of a flexible metal weather strip constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section showing the interposition of my novel weather strip between one vertical edge of the sash and the side stile of the sash frame.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the weather stri per se.
igure 4 is .a similar view .of a modified weather strip.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in Figures 1 to 3, to which reference will be first made.
I show in Figure 2 aside stile 1 of a sash frame in which is a channel 2 alongside a parting strip 3; the stile being also provided with a stop 4 spaced from the parting strip 3 as shown to provide for the reception between the parting strip 3 and the stop 4 of the edge portion of a sliding sash 5. In the edge portion of the sliding sash 5 is a groove 6.
My novel flexible metal weather strip er se is designated by 7 and it will be un erstood as having a bead 8, a tongue 9 with a lapped portion 10, and a rib 11. The be-- forementioned cove in the sash 5 is preferably U-shaped in cross section, and the rib 11 is of V-shape in cross section. This assures maximum flexibility of the strip and insures a free acting sash and close contact between the strip and sash under all conditions. The tongue 9 is designed to be arranged alongside the parting strip 3 and in the channel 2 as appears in Figure 2 and is adapted to shift its position in the channel 2 as the sash 5 swells or shrinks. The strip is also provided with an edge portion 12 adapted to be interposed between the stop 4 sage o and the stile 1. The bead 8 is adapted when flexed by the. stop or by nails to raise the Ilb 11 so as to properly contact with a very loose sash. While I prefer to em loy the said edge ortion 12 on the-strip,& would have 1t un erstood that the said edge portion 12 is: not essential to the practice of my inventlon, and therefore said edge portion 12 may in some cases be altogether omitted from the str1p as is the case 1n the enibodi ment of the invention shown in Fi ure 3.
.It will be apparent from the oregoing that my improvement as thus far described 1s simple and inexpensive, the strip being susceptlble of ready production, and being adapted to be installed, and being calculated when properly installed to prevent the pasweather between the sash and the stile of the sashframe under all conditions.
The modified strip 7" shown in Figure 4 is manifestly less expensive than the embodiments shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. It will be noted that the strip 7*, lacks the tongue 9; the end of the said strip 7 being adapted to be opposed to and wipe against the adjacent side of the parting strip 3.
While I prefer to employ the embodiments illustrated and specifically described in the manner hereinbefore set forth, I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement. of the weather strip as disclosed, my invention being defined by my appended claims within the scope of which modifications may be made without departure from my invention.
Havingthus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In combination, a sash having a groove in its edge, a sash frame having a stop and parting strip spaced from the stop, and a flexible metal weather strip interposed between the stop and the parting strip and movable between the edge of the sash and the sash frame and having at an intermediate point in its width a rib extending laterally rom the major portion of the strip and disposed in the cove of the sash; the said groove being 0 U-shape in cross section, and the said rib of the strip being of V-shape in cross section.
2. In combination, a sash frame having in its edge a groove of U-shape in cross section, a sash frame having a stop and a parting strip spaced-from the stop and also having alongside the parting strip a channel, and a flexible metal weather strip interposed between the stop and the parting strip and movable between the sash and the sash frame and having an edge portion interposed be tween the stop and the sash frame and a 5 head adjacent to the stop and further having at an intermediate oint in its width a lateral V-shaped rib disposed in the groove of the sash and further having at its opposite edge an angularly disposed tongue movable alongside the parting strip and in the said 10 channel of the sash frame.
