LAPPING MACBINE Filed Sept. 21. 19 2e lmll lll hfi S'lATES orro cnarsrran rncn, ea, or new BRUNSWICK, new JERSEY, nssrenon 'ro .n W illilBSEY.
LAPPING application filed September Cotton macl'iincry of the nature of finish ing lapping machines essentially includes eveucr roll and feed rolls which feed the stool; from the feed table or conveyer to the boaters The action of the rolls not infrequently results in harsh and deleterious treatment of the fiber owing to the hard pressing or matting of the cotton. The matted stock is firmly held in the bight of the rolls and while so held is further impaired byrepeated action of the heaters the effect of which is to break up any leaf and chaff which may be present making it more dillicult to remove. Sometimes the leaf or other foreign matter is broken to such ex tent as to enable it to be drawn to the cage screen and so carried with the good fiber into the finished lap.
The principal object of my invention is to obviate the disadvantageous conditions aforestated by the provision of means which will insure the presentation of the stock to the action of the heaters in a loose condition thereby facilitating the removal of leaf or other foreign matter with a minimum loss of good fiber, so that the lap when presented to the carding machine is in a good clean fluffy condition which, obviously, cases and eirpedites the carding operation.
The nature of the invention consists in the introduction between the usual rolls and the heaters of draft mechanism comprising a draw roll and a cooperating draw nose bar, the arrangement being such as to account for a slightdraft between the feed rolls and the draw roll in consequence of which the stock or cotton, even of inferior orindifferent grad-e, instead of being presented to the heaters in a hard pressed or tightly matted condition, is presented in a relatively loose or open state so that the beaters are enabled effectively to comb or brush out the foreign matter.
(l ther objects, as w acteristic features and scope of the invention "nore readily will be understood from the rollowing description, taken in conned tion with accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein,-

F 1g. 3 is an end view of the draw roll and nose bar.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the nose bar, more particularly showing one of the centering elements.
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the modilied right and left roll stands.
The details of the lapping machine, aside from the improvements, are or may be as usual, including the feed apron or conveyor 5, evener roll 6, paired feed rolls 7 and 8, and beater 9.
'According to my invention, the roll stands 10 and 11 are modified to accommodate, in addition to the usual roll complement and gearlng, the draw roll and nose bar, and a gear for operating the draw roll. For this purpose, the right hand stand 10 and the left hand stand 11 have upwardly directed openings 12, the bottom walls of which are formed with recesses 13. The top feed roll 7 and the added draw roll 14 are journaled in bearing blocks 15 which have a rise and fall motion under the control of appropriate hold down devices consisting of coiled springs 16 and caps 17 carrying adjusting screws 18. Roll 14 may be fluted in common with the other rolls.
The draft plate or so-called nose bar 19 is arranged below the roll 14:, has a depending stiffening rib 20 and flat terminals 21. 'lhe latter fit the recesses 13 and serve to center the nose bar. Beyond the terrninals, the bar is equipped with marginal extensions 22 and 23, whereof the former is flush with the top of the bar and is directed towards the usual feed rolls and provides draft between the latter and the draw roll 1d. The upwardly directed nose extension 23 has a top curvature substantially in coincidence with the draw roll.
By the construction and arrangement stated, the cotton is delivered at the nose extremity in a substantially open state thereby greatly facilitating the action of the beater and insuring a clean product with a minimum loss of good fiber.
The rolls, including the draw roll, are driven by suitable gearing generally indicated at 24;, the ratio being such as to speed up the delivery end so as to establish a draw.
Having described my invention, 1 claim:
1. In a machine of the nature indicated, in con'ibination, with the usual roll equipment and beater, a draw roll intermediate said equipment and the heater, and means cooperating therewith for presenting the stock to the heater in a substantially nutty state.
2. In a machine of the nature indicated, in combination, with the evener roll, feed rolls, and beater, of an added roll interposed between the feed rolls and beater, and an element below the added roll to provide for draft between the feed rolls and said added roll and cooperating with the latter to deliver the stock in a substantially open con dition.
3. In a machine of the nature indicated, in combination, with the usual roll equipment and heater, a teed roll intermediate said equipment and the beater, means providing draft between the usual rolls and the intermediate roll and having an upwardly directed extension which cooperates with the intermediate roll to deliver the stock in an open state.
l. In a machine of the nature indicated, in combination, with the usual roll equipment and heater, a feed roll intermediate said equipment and the beater, a nose bar below the feed roll, and gearing for driving the rolls and of such ratio as to provide for draft between the added roll and the other rolls.
5. In a machine of the nature indicated, in combination, with the usual roll equip ment and heater, roll stands having centering notches, a draw bar centered therein, and a draw roll above the draw bar and cooperatingwith the latter to deliver the stock in an open state.
(3. In a machine oi the nature indicattai, in combination, with the usual roll couipnu-nt and heater, roll stands having centering notches, a draw bar centered iluariu and having wing extenaions whereot one is directed towards the rolls and is flush with the top of the bar and whereoit the other is an upward nose extension direct i'OWill'tir; the heater, and a draw roll above the draw bar.
7. In a machine of the nature iiuiicatcd, in combination, with the usual roll equip ment and heater, roll stands having centering notches, a draw bar centered therein and havin Wlllfl extenaions whereoji one is di- C v rected towards the rolls and is liush with the top of the bar and whereof the other an upward nose extension direct towards tlubeater, a draw roll above the draw bar, and hold down mechanism for the draw roll.
In testimony whereof I aiiiix my signature.
