w. E. GASKIN BACK AND HEAD REST FOR BEACHES Filed Aug, 9, 1926 INVENTOR ATTORNEY-5' Patented Feb. 14, 1928.
WILLIAM E. anemia, or OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
BACK AND HEAD BEST FOR BEACHES.
Application filed. August 9, 1926. Serial No. 128,040.
My invention relates to a portable rest for supporting the back and head of a person sitting or reclining upon the ground.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means for securely anchoring such aback and head rest when used 7 in sand, as upon a beach, without interfering with its angular adjustment to any desired position. Asecond objectis to provide such a rest easily folded into compact size. These and other objects will become apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, which should be read with the understanding that the form, proportion, and arrangement of the several parts may be varied, within the limits of the claims hereto appended, without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in said claims.
\Vith this in view a preferred embodiment of my invention will now be described fully with reference to the accompanying draw' ings, wherein Fig. 1 1s a perspectiveview of my baclt and head rest as seen fromtherear.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Fig. 3' is a rear elevation of the lower portion of the rest and the anchor member associated therewith. I,
In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates the body or backssupporting members of the device, against which the user may lean his back, shoulders, or head, according to whether he sits or reclines upon the ground. The back-supporting member 1 may be formed of any suitable material having the necessary strength, such. for example as the well known laminated wood chair seat or back. At its lower edge, said back-supporting member is provided with a horizontal reinforcing foot strip 2, the edge portion of the back-supporting member being mortised into the forward edge of said strip, as shown at 3, and permanently secured thereto in any suitable manner.
For holding the back-supporting member 1 at the desired angle,'I provide a brace member consisting of a pair of arms at, whose upper ends are secured to the. rear face of said back-supporting member by hinges 5, and whose lower ends are joined by a transverse foot piece 6. I make said foot piece relatively wide and flat, as shown, to offer greater resistance to which is light in weight and.

prefer to loose sand. The ends of the arms 4: are
preferably mortised into one edge of said foot piece, and the joints thus formed are reinforced by metal strips 7.
To hold the lower edge of the back-supporting member 1 from slipping, I provide an anchor member adapted. to be forced into the sand. This anchor member may be of any suitable and convenient form, but I prefer to make it in the. form of a bail 8 of iron, bent as shown, with its central portion hinged to the foot piece 2 by suitable cleats 9, and with its projecting ends rigidly joined by a relatively flat blade 10. The anchor member, as will be readily understood, can be folded up against the rear face of the member 1, and the brace member can be similarly folded down, thus making a compact, flat device which is easily carried about.
Inthe use of the device, the anchor member is swung downwardly approximately to the position shown, and is pushed downwardly into the sand as shown in Fig. 2, the surface of the sand being indicated by the The brace member is then extended sufiieiently to provide the desired angle for the back-supporting member 1, and its foot piece 6 is allowed to rest upon, or is forced a slight distance into, the sand, as shown. The anchor member, with its fiat blade 10 buried in the sand, prevents the bottom of the back-supporting member from slipping or shifting, and yet permits its angle to be adjusted, as desired, by suitable positioning of the brace member.
I claim:
1. A back and back-supporting member; a
head rest comprising a swinging ball carried by the lower portion of said member at its back; an anchor blade carried by said bail; and a brace member hinged to the rear face of the upper portion of the back-supporting member.
2. A back and head rest comprising a back-supporting member; a foot strip secured to the rear face of said member at its lower edge; a bail hinged to said foot strip; an anchorblade carried by said bail; a pair of rearwardly extending arms hinged at their upper ends to the upper portion of said back-supporting member; and a foot piece" carried by the lower ends ofsaid arms.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM E. GASKIN.
