present invention has for its object to provide a simple and highly efficient automatic' stop for churns; and tothis end it is sounded. By the use of our invention, an attendant having started a churn may go away and do other workand at the completion of the'churning action, the churn will i be automatically stopped by the disconnection of the driving mechanism th-ereof by operating the clutch or by throwing a switch when the churn is operated by a motor.

Of the parts of the combined churn and butter worker to which the invention is applied, it is important to note the frame 7 barrel 8 and driving mechanismfor the churn barrel, and its rollsindicated as an entirety by the numeral9, with the exception of the driven pulley 10 over which runs a driving belt,'not shown, clutch 11 for connecting said pulleyto the driving mechaa nism, and the clutch shift lever 12. Foimedin the back of the ratchet wheel 26 directly opposite the zero point of the graduations 29 is a recess 80 into which the adjacent end of the sliding bar 22 will be projected by the spring andthe cam surface 21 on the lever 17 to release said lever. The recess 30 and the adjacent end of the sliding bar 22 have co-operat-ing cam sur ger bar 31 by which said ratchet wheel may be turned.
To impart a step of movement to the ratchet wheel 26 for each rotation of the barrel 8, there is journaled in the housing 7 20 a rock shaft 32 havinga crank 33 to which is'pivoted ap'awl 34 gravity-held for engage:
ment with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 26.
A'spri'n'g 35 attached to the rock shaft 32 and anchored to the housing 20 holds said rock shaft with the pawl 34 in a retracted position. Secured to the outer end of the rock shaft 32 is a radial arm 36 arranged to be engaged by a trip finger 37 on the =barrel8 which extends parallel to the axis thereof. This trip finger 37 is pivoted to a block 38 secured tothe under side of the cylindrical shell of the barrel 8 outward of i. the adjacent head thereof. A. stop shoulder '39 onthe block 38 holds the trip finger 37 against pivotal movement and in a position toengage the radial arm 36 and thereby operate the/rock shaft 32 and then pass be- :yond said arm under the rotation of said barrel.
.If it is desired to operate the barrel 8 without the automatic stop, the trip finger 37 may be moved into a position in which it will pass by the arm 36 without engaging the same. A radial arm 40 on the rock shaft :32 'a lfords manually operated means :by
whichthe pawl 34 may be operated to move the ratchet wheel 26.
The housing 20 is supported on ashelf 41 andis secured thereto by nut-equipped bolts 42 which extend through slots 43 in said shelf to permit said housing to be adjusted toward or from the barrel 8 to properly position the arm 36 in respect to the trip finger 37. The shelf 41 is supported on a standard .44 secured to oneof the longitudinal members of the frame 7. This standard 44 comprises telescopically connected members which may be longitudinally adjusted to raise or lower the shelf 41. A horizontal arm connects the shelf 41 to one of the hearings on the frame '4' and holds said shelf against horizontal movement. i V
When the lever 17 has been released by the sl-idii-ig bar 22, at the time it enters the recess 30 at the completion of the number of rotations of the barrel 8, theweight 13 swings the lever 1? downward and slides from the supporting pin 16. The fall of the weight 13 acting on the clutch shift lever 12through the cable 14, releases the clutch 11 and stops the driving connections to the barrel 8.
W hat we claim is:
1. The combination with a, rotatable member and power meanswith connections for rotating said member and having a shiftable member for cutting the same out of action, of a wheel adapted to be set in difierent rotated positions to represent a predetermined number of revolutions of said n1einber drivingmeans arranged to be operated by said member for imparting steps of movement to said wheel, power means having a connection to said shiftable member for operating the same, a lever releasably holding the power means, and an endwise movable member directly engaging said wheel as a stop for holding said lever against the action of the power means and arranged to be released by said wheel 'after it has made a predetermined number of revolutions.
2. The combination with a rotatable member and power means with connections for rotating said member and having a shiftable member for cutting the same out of action, of a wheel adapted to be set in different rotated positions to represent a predetermined number of revolutions of said member,'drivi-ng means arranged to be operated by said member for imparting steps of movement to said wheel, power means having a connection to said shiftable member for operating the same, a lever releasably holding said power means, and a sliding bar extending substantially parallel to the axis of the wheel and engaging the same as'a stop and holding the leveragainst the action of the power means, said wheel having a recess into which said bar will be projected to release the lever after said wheel has made a predetermined number of revolutions.
