RULEi S LIDE FOR SETTING BLANK FORMS ON SLUG-CASTING MACHINES.
Application filed August 31,1926. Serial No. 132,832.
This invention relates to improvements in typographical machines, such as the linotype machine illustrated in Letters Patent of the United States numbered 436,532 to O. Mergenthaler, wherein printing bars or slugs having characters on one face are castby means of a number of matrices which form one edge of the slug casting die or mold. In special kinds of work, as for example in the production of rules for printing tabular forms, single tabular matrices are assembled by hand within the mold and having in their faces longitudinal and variously spaced transverse formative cavities correspondingto the characters to be printed, the longitudinal cavities forming the longiverse cavities forming the transverse rules in the slug. l/Vhen a number of these-slugs are assembled to print a ruled form, the longitudinal rules print the horizontal lines and-the transverse rules print the variously spaced vertical lines. From the'foregoing, it will be apparent that any change desired in the spacing of the vertical lines, after the slugs are formed, will necessitate procuring new matrices and casting new slugs thereagainst, resulting in numerous matrices and slugs and an enormous waste of time and labor. The present invention overcomes these disadvantagesin a simple, eflicient and economical manner.
It is the purpose of this invention to provide means for printing differently ruled sheets with a minimum number of forms and matrices, and without recasting or otherwise changing the printing faces of said forms. 1
It is further an object of this invention to provide means for printing tabular work wherein the formation of the printing faces or rules, and of the several slugs making up Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordi-' nary quad block with the several slides made in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of one of the slides,
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the same; I
c Figure 4 is a greatly enlarged fragmentary perspective showing of several assembled slugs'illustrating their printing faces; and 2 Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective of a portion of a ledger sheet printedfrom slugs made in accordance with the invention.
"Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate 'corre-. sponding parts throughout, the numeral 1 indicates, generally, a quad block of the usual type, having in the face thereof the usual dove-tailed groove or channel 2 for the reception ofthe slides 3,4, 5 and 6; a
pin 7 is provided at one extremity of the channel 2 and is adapted to coact with a notch 8 in the slides to hold the same in proper alignment within the quad block. The slides 4, 5 and 6 are provided in their faces with longitudinal channels 9, for the purpose of forming on the faces of the slugs 12, 13 and 14, the ribs or rules 15, designed to print the vertical lines 21 of the ledger sheet, as indicated by the numeral 20 in Figure 5. Transverse channels 10 in the slides 3, 4, 5 and 6 form the rules 16, designed to print the horizontal lines 22 of the ledger sheet 20. It will be apparent that the slugs 12, 13 and 14 will each print a vertical line 21 in addition to the horizontal lines; whereas slugs 11, cast against the slides 3 are provided on their faces only with the transverse ribs or'rules 16, as shown in Figure 4, thereby providing means for extending the space between the vertical lines 21; the rules 16 effecting continuity of the horizontal lines 22, as indicated by the numeral 23 in Figure 5.
According to the present invention only four slides are required to produce the neces sary slugs to print tabular forms similar to or the same as the form indicated in Figure 5. The slide 3 is provided with only transverse formative cavities 10, whereas the remaining three slides, 4, 5 and 6 require both transverse and longitudinal formative cavities 9 and 10. The slide 4 has a single longitudinal channel or cavity 9; the slide 5 is provided with a pair of i longitudinal cavities 9 and the slide 6 is provided with a Wider channel 9 than that of slide 4, whereby a heavy vertical ruled line may be printed upon the tabular form.
As clearly shown in the drawing, the rules 16 formed transversely of the slugs 11, 12, 13 and 14 are adapted, in the printing of the ruled sheets 20, to form the horizontal lines 22 and 23 thereof, and are cast integrally with the slugs, extending fully across the face thereof whereby the edge of each rule 16 abuts snugly upon the edge of the corresponding rules of the adjacent slugs; in this way, continuous and unbroken horizontal lines are formed completely across the sheet.
It is apparent from the foregoing that the same slugs used to print one form of sheet may themselves be rearranged to print any desired form of tabular or ruled sheet, having vertical or horizontal ruled lines, Without recasting the against new slides, or otherwise changing the characters on their faces; therefore, the same slugs may be used to print a number of differing forms, and should it be needed, may be set up to reprint the first printed form.
Manifest-1y, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claims, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A set of slides each adapted to extend throughout the matrix retaining channel of a quad block, said slides each having transversely extending formative cavities for casting line printing matter spaced according to ordinary printing and several of said slides having longitudinal formative cavities.
2. A common set of slides adapted to form slugs for printing various tabular forms having vertical and horizontal lines comprising four slides each having transverse formative cavities for casting line printing matter spaced according to ordinary printing and three of said slides having longitudinal formative cavities in addition to the transverse formative cavities.
In a device of the character described, a series of slides adapted to be removably set in the face of a quad block, each having in the face thereof longitudinal cavities for casting vertically disposed printing matter and transverse formative cavities, said transverse cavities extending the full width of the slug formative face of said slides whereby to form slugs in a manner to carry across their several faces a series of continuous and unbroken lines.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set
