IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,890, dated July 20, 1875; application filed 4 l May 31, 1e75.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GAMALIEL TAYLoR, of De Witt, in the county of Carroll and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usef'ul Improvements in Earth-Angers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an earth-auger, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe i-ts construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- I Figure lis a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line x x. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views of my invention.
The bucket of my earth-.auger is made in three pieces, A A and B each forming about onethird ofthe barrel. The two parts A A have the bits G C secured to their lower ends, and at their upper ends they have bars D I),
which are bolted on the opposite sides of 'the auger-shaft E, and the adjoining edges of said two parts united in any suitable manner. The third part B is, near the lower end, on each side, provided with a perforated ear or projection, a, which hooks on a hook, b, formed j by means of an L-shaped slot in the edges of the parts A A. The upper end of the part B is provided with a bar, D', which has a slot in its upper end, to lit over a staple, d, in the shaft E, and a key, c, then passed through the sta-ple to hold said part in its place. By simply knocking out the key c, the part B of the auger-bucket can be easily removed for clean ing the bucket. One or both of the bars D have a series of bolt-holes, so that either part A may be raised, so that the bit on the other part A 'can take up rocks, if required. The anger-shaft is made, as usual, in sections, E E', Src., and the sections united in the following manner: On the lower end of the section E' is secured a tube or sleeve, G, which projects sufficiently far to pass over the upper end of the section E. On the lower end of the sleeve G is a flange, h, having on one side a slotted projection, '5, above which the sleeve is slotted longitudinally for the passage of a lug, m, secured in the shaft-section E. On the sleeve G is placed a loose collar, G', which rests on the flange h, and has a slotted projection, i', corresponding with the projection t' on the tlange. The upper edge of the collar G is inclined upward from the projection t" in both directions to a point directly opposite the same. The collar G must first be turned so that the slotted projections iz" are on a line with each other. The sleeve G isthen placed on the shaft-section E, the lug m passing through said projections and into the slot in the sleeve. The collar G can then be turned in either direction, and its inclined upper edge will take on the lug m and firmly couple the shaft sections together. In the section E, immediately below the sleeve G, is inserted an eyebolt, p, into which the hoisting-rope is hooked by a suitable hook, in such a .manner that when the sleeve is put on the hook cannot be removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an earth-auger bucket consisting of two sections, A A, carrying the bits C O, and one removable sectiom, I claim one or both of the sections A made adjustable up and down on the shaft, for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the auger-shaft sections E E', of the slotted sleeve G, having tlange h, with slotted projection fi, the loose collar G', with slotted projection i and inclined upper edge, and the lug m, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony tha-tI claim the foregoing as my own, Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses. GAMALIEL TAYLOR. Witnesses: l BENONI CLARK,
GEORGE SHOUP.
