IMPROVEMENT IN BRAKE-SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,872, dated July 20, 1875; application filed April 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM ROBINSON, Jr., of Wilmington, New Castle county, Delaware, have invented a new and Improved Brake-Shoe, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved car-brake shoe with sole attached, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to avoid the flying oif of the soles of car-brakeshoes, by which the safety of the train is endangered because of their liability to get under the wheel; and the invention consists in a secure mode of attaching the sole to the shoe.
In the drawing, A represents the brakeshoe, which is attached, in the customary manner in carbrakes, firmly to the end of the brake-beam. The brake-shoe A is provided with a recess, a, at the upper end, and with a slot, 1;, at the lower end, which serve to connect the interchangeable and detachable sole part B by a top hook, d, locking into recess a, and by a perforated lug or ear, 6, passing through the lower slot (1. The ear 6 is firmly secured to the shoe by a suitable key, wedge, screw, or other fastening device, f. The sole Bv is thereby fastened in a very secure manner, without being liable to be thrown 011' by the vibration and friction to which it is posed, while it may be readily and quickly replaced when worn out by use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A brake-shoe having recess a at the upper end and slot 1) at the lower, in combination with sole B, having top hook d and ear 6, as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM ROBINSON, JR.
