Our invention relates to improvements in brooders, and it consists in the combinations,
constructions and arrangements herein described "and claimed.
This application is a divisional part of ourprior application Serial #720,010, filed June 14:, 1924.

The improved brooder includes a heater unit indicated generally at 1 which com prises a casing or hollow body 2 in which coal or like fuel may be burned. The gases and waste products of combustion may pass from the casing 2 through a fine pipe 3 which may extend from the top of the easing 2 to any desirable place. The heater casing 2 is supported on a cylindrical base 4; which may rest upon a supporting floor or platform 5 over an opening 6 in said floor or platform.

A damper or draft check 14 for the heating unit may be operated by a rod 15. The rod 15 is supported on a frame 16 so that it can move axially to open or close the draft or check 14: and the axial movement of this rod 15 is controlled by a thermostatic element 17.
A hover comprises a frusto-conical body 18 which is supported at its upper end on the upper end portion of the heater casing 52 and terminates at its lower and larger end above the level of the floor 5. A skirt 19 depends from the lower edge of the hover 18 nearly to the floor or platform. The

skirt 19 is made of a suitable flexible material, such as a heavy fabric.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operatlon thereof will be readily understood. \Vith the construction shown, the temperature gradient will show a gradual and regular increase from the outer edge of the hover plate to the central source of heat, thus increasing the area of correct temperature for chicks, commonly termed the chick circle area. Air passing through the openings 6 into the hollow base section of the heater casing and then through the openings 108 will be deflected upwardly by the baffle 13 close to the heater body and will be warmed before passing from the upper end of the battle 13 into the space under the hover.
The temperature beneath the hover 18 will be regulated automatically by means of the The chicks beneath the hover plate thus will be protected from drafts of cool air because of the outward direction of the warmed air, particularly at and near the edge of the hover plate and the temperature beneath the hover plate will increase gradually and regularly from the outer edge of the hover plate toward the heater drum. As a result, the capacity of a brooder of a given size is increased beyond the ordinary when a brooder embodying the invention as hereinbefore described is used and the breeder may be located in a cooler room than is usual, which is a very desirable feature for the growth of vigorous, hardy chicks. 7
Obviously, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and we therefore consider as our own all such modifications and adaptations thereof as fairly fall'within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim a 1. A brooder comprising a heater casing, said casing including acylindrical base section adapted to rest on a horizontal supporting member over an opening in said horizontal supporting member, said cylindrical base section having a circumferentially spaced series of openings in the lower end portion thereof, a rotary annular shutter plate for controlling said openings in said base section, said shutter plate having openings corresponding in number and relative arrangement with the openings in said base section, and an annular baflie encircling the lower end portion of said heater casing and resting upon said supporting member, said annular battle extending close to said heater casing above the level of said openings in the base section of the heater casing.

A brooder comprising a heater casing, said casing including a cylindrical base section adapted to rest on a horizontal supporting member over an opening in said horizontal supporting member, said cylindrical base section having a Cll'CLlIIlfOIClltially spaced series of openings in the lower end portion thereof, a rotary annular shutter plate for controlling said openings in said base section, said shutter plate having openings corresponding in number and relative arrangement with the openings in said base section, and an annular baflle surrounding the lower end portion of said heater casing and resting upon said supporting memher, said annular battle extending close to said heater casing above the level of said openings in the base section of the heater casing, and a substantially frusto-conical hover carried by the upper end portion of said heater casing and depending below the level of the upper end of said annular halite.
3. In a brooder, a heater casing cylindrical as to its base and perforated therein andfiared in its upper portion, an annular baflie surrounding said heater casing parallel thereto and uniformly spaced therefrom as to the casings cylindrical and flared portions, means for admitting intake air to the space between said ballle and. said heater casing and a frusto conical hover plate surrounding the said heater casing and supported at its upper end from the heater casing above the upper end of the annular baflle so as to be held oil the ground.
