MORRIS T. BLIER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CIG-AR LIGHTER.
Application filed June 8,
My invention relates to cigar lighters and has a. particular reference to electrically heated devices for lighting cigars adapted to be attached to any suitable stationary object.
The object of my invention is to provide a cigar lighter in combination with an ash tray which could be clamped to a floor lamp or any similar stationary object. In t-his 1o manner my cigar lighter can be placed Within easy reach for a person sitting, for 1nstance, in a chair. In order to make my cigar lighter still more convenient for use I provide same With an extensioncord on a spring reel, so that the heating element could be pulled out for use, the spring reel Winding the cord again when the lighter is released.
My invention is more fully described in 2c the accompanying specification and drawing in Which- Fig. 1 is an elevation of my cigar lighter partly in section, and
Fig. 2 is a plan View of same.
My cigar lighter consists of an electrically heated cigar lighting unit 1 to which the electric current is supplied by means of an insulated double twisted cord 2. The lighting unit is provided with a, switch 3 oi' any suitable construction. It is not shown in section as: it may be ot' any standard design and construction, except that it is provided With a circular skirt l With which it rests on the edge of a tubular projection 5 formed in the bottom of an ash tray 6.
This tubular projection forms a channel for the cord 2 and its lower portion is flared out in order to allowmore freedom ot movement for the cord. This tubular projection is raised sutliciently high to prevent the ashes from the tray from falling into the opening.
It is placed nearer to one side of the tray so as to leave more room for the cigarette stubs etc. At the other side the tray 6 has the ashes. This opening is closed with a cover 8 on a hinge 9. It is clamped to the bottom of the tray by means ot' a spring 10 with a hook 11 engaging the lug 12 on the cover.
The cord 2 is Wound on a. reel 13 on a shaft 14. The ends of this shaft are journaled in the Walls of a reel housing 15 attached to the bottom side of the tray 6. A flat spiral spring 16 is attached with one end an opening 7 in the bottom t'or cleaning out 1927. Serial No. 197,370.
to the sha-ft 14 and with the other to the housing 15. This spring keeps the cord Wound on t-he reel under tension and winds it again after the unit l has been pulled out and used. TWO concentric contact rings 17 are placed on the other side of the reel (the inner ring is not shown) and the ends of the cord 2 are connected to these rings. The electric current is delivered to the contact rings by means ot' metal brushes 18 and 19 placed in insulating bushings 20 and supported in the apertures in the Wall of the housing l5. cord 21 is attached to con` tact brushes and is extended to the source ot' electric current, for instance, by being connected to an electric lamp socket or to a plug receptacle.
A bracket 22 is attached partly to the bottom of the tray, partly to the reel housing 15.
The outer end of this bracket is formed to suit a stationary object, such as a fioor lamp stand 23. A second bracket 24 is pivotally connected with the iirst bracket by means of a hinge or pivot 25 and is also formed to engage the lamp stand 23. A screu7 26 is inserted in the holes in both brackets and is tightened by means of a Wing nut 27 thereby clamping the brackets on the stand 23.
Vith this arrangement my device can be temporarily clamped to any suitable object Within an easy reach oi3 a smoker. The lighting unit can be pulled out to light the cigar or cigarette in the smokers mouth, after Which the lighting unit will be pulled back in its place by the reel spring. The ash tray itself can be also conveniently used in connection with the lighter.
I claim asmy invention:
1. In a. cigar lighter, the combination Wit-h an electrically heated cigar lighting member, a iiexible cable extending from said member, a reel for said cable, a housing for said reel, an ash tray forming a. cover for said reel, and a clamp extending sideWise from Said housing and adapted to encircle a vertically extending stationary object.
2. In a cigar lighter, the combination with an electrically heated cigar lighting member, of a liexible cable extending from said member, a reel for said cable, a housing for said reel, an ash tray forming a. cover for said housing, said ash tray being provided with an aperture for said cable, the edges of said tra-y around said aperture being raised forming a tubular projection, said member being vprovidecl with central recess adapteclto't over said projection When said cable vis VWound on said reel.VV
3. In a cigar lighter, the combination with an electrically heated cigar lighting member, of a flexible cable extending from said niembcer, a reel for said cable, means to conductthe electric current to seid member through "A, 13.1927. said cable, e housingfor said reel, the top A cover of said housing being formed as: an 10 ashtray, a clamp'extending sidewse from said housing and adapted tov be clamped Vin the connty of "5
